Found out on Friday I'm going to need root canal work at the dentist in a weeks time. After a couple of days of bad toothache I went to the dentists who gave me the news after a few xrays etc.

Has anyone recently had a root canal procedure at the dentist? Really worried about this and how its going to feel.

The dentist gave me some tables called Amoxicillin to help get rid of any infection in the tooth and root. And i've had to take a lot of pain killers til it all calms down which its finally done now the Amoxicillin has kicked in so I've now gone from a stabbing in the tooth to more of a gentle throb.

Amoxicillin is an antibiotic to get rid of the infection. You'll be fine with the root canal work so don't worry about it

It's boring, that's about it. No pain, no discomfort other than having the scaffolding in your mouth, and being stuck in the chair for 30-40 mins per session.

I had an old root cancal excavated and re-done a couple of years back... 3 x 2+ hour sessions but very little pain once the injection were all in.

It's uncomfortable laying there with a big rubber sheet in your mouth for a couple of hours at a time, though... although that's not as uncomfortable as the hole in your wallet after you leave!!!

I have yet to have any kind of injection at the dentist.

Thank God, as I'm **** scared of injections for some reason. :p

Got my BCG in school 5 times cause I kept jerking my arm.

And that injection you get where there are two different vaccinations at the same time in different arms, I jerked my right arm and the needle cut a 2 inch mark. :(

Gay tbh :)

I've had a root canal filling and it wasn't painful, just not much fun as it takes 30-40 minutes and there is a reasonable amount of noise and drilling/filing they do.

Why is this sort of procedure required?

I'm not being a breasticle, I honestly don't know what it's for or what it involves.

As soon as a cavity gets so big that it reaches the pulp/nerve of the tooth you have to remove it because it's irreparable. The root canal is cleaned out and filled with some rubber-type substance then the tooth is restored with a crown and/or filling.
