Root canals - anyone got one?

I went with a BUPA private dentist and didn't feel a thing.

if you're in the London vicinity, I highly recommend Jenny Pinder.

I have one at the front, It discoloured my tooth slightly and has now made me self conscious of my smile. :(

I've been looking into it online and apparently an internal bleaching could help me.

I've had a root canal done in the first molar bottom right.

Filling that was in there had half fallen out, spent months with an infection at the base of the root (which resulted in a huge pus spot on my gum for a while).
I hate dentist injections, even more than I hate dentists and after having 6 teeth pulled at a younger age due to overcrowding I saw extraction being the easy choice.

However, as the tooth was entirely dead I required no injections, worst part was having the X-Ray taken (with a metal spike in the tooth). No pain and I have a fully working tooth. Mine wasn't capped however, just filled so it quickly wore down to the shape required.

i had a root canal done then caps put in they kept falling out in the end had the roots extracted and a denture instead

She did say that if I went ahead with the extraction and found that the gap was giving me bother then a denture would be an option. I sorely regret not looking after my teeth when I was younger that I'm having to consider these things now. Can always blame my parents, they probably gave me a wham bar and told me to suck on it until I fell asleep when I was a kid. :p

I had a root canal done years ago, it hurt having it done, the dentist was rubbish and a couple years later the tooth broke, I had to go to an emergency dentist as there was a shard of tooth beneath the gum and bits above the tooth so couldn't close mouth without pain. I went there and they said, that had to have a crown on it as the tooth was weakend by the root canal, I should say they meant it should have had one or was always going to break. My previous dentist just failed to mention it, though on talking to him about it(he was NHS, couldn't afford private at the time and getting on a NHS dentists list quickly is almost impossible(or was way back then, not sure about now) so had to go back to him.

He says he would have told me to get a crown, I know he didn't, not much to be done about it, he decides the tooth has to come out, but doesn't do extractions so I have an appointment for a really dodgy place in Southall, which resembles a barber shop when I get there. Have it injected, at least he did it well as I couldn't feel a thing but when he finally looks properly he says he's about 90% sure the tooth can still be saved and he won't remove teeth that can be saved easily. Sends me back and the original guy says "yeah I guess we can try". At this point I had no fight left in me, hated dentists, let him build up a tooth with filling around what little tooth there was left and it worked for 5-6 years.... broke last sunday finally.

I hate dentists, I'm dreading going to one severely and am still putting it off, luckily it broke above the gum line and isn't really causing any pain just yet but definitely needs dealing with.

Anyway, moral of the story being, saving teeth is good, healthy teeth are good, get a good dentist, if you aren't happy with one, leave mid treatment if you want, do not put up with a dentist you aren't happy with, ever. Also root canals probably need more treatment long term to save the tooth, a crown to maintain the strength, letting a dentist half arse it or being so put off by the treatment you don't go back till its too late are bad things.

Just a follow up from my original query. The first treatment was today and it took 45mins in the chair and was no worse than a filling, the worst part was probably the injection and it wasn't particularly painful. There was bad news to come though as apparently I have a root and the dentist said that as hard she tried she wasn't able to get it done for whatever reason. Not really what I wanted to hear as apparently missed roots are a big cause of failure. She also went over again about getting a crown as mentioned although that would be at a later date.

Don't have to go back for a month and have temp filling in at the minute I'm thinking if I get a few years out of it and it fails then just get it pulled then.

Canals can be very fine, if not all are found and cleaned then infection an reoccur, likely she cleaned out what she could find, and next day will repeat the process, hoping to find the final one. Then build a core on the tooth (fill it) and leave it suitable to be crowned.

At that stage a crown should provide additional strength and buy you years.
Often they can be left after filled for a while to make sure things remain settled.

I had a root canal done privately in 2003 and my tooth has been perfect.

I fell for the sales line that I was sold so when private at a cost of £430 plus another £200 for the cap but i'm glad i didn't have the tooth extracted. Wish i'd just gone with the basic service though.

I got the impression she wasn't going to be doing the one she couldn't find next time as she had said she had tried all that she could to do it and there was a chance it would be fine.

Had one done a year or two ago, with a gold crown - not had any issues since (thankfully) and the treatment , though uncomfortable, wasn't painful.

Ask if your dentist can do or refer you to another dentist that can do IV sedation, its brilliant!
For anything more than a filling I hate the idea of the potential nerve pain and long time in the chair so I was offered to have my root canal done under IV sedation on the NHS - It felt like it was done in under 5 minutes (actually took 45) and I didn't feel or remember a thing, it was just done.
Got a ceramic crown and so far it still looks like a perfect tooth after a year.

Had a root canal about a year ago, I really have a severe fear of dentists, the dentist wanted to extract, I couldn't guarantee how I would react to that, I had an extraction a few years ago and I had to have a massive load of laughing gas for them to do it.

I would literally be less scared to have a proper operation than dental work, anyway the dentist wasn't able to get all the root as apparently my roots hook at the bottom, he then crowned it with an expensive specially moulded piece of ceramic, he actually dropped the ceramic in my mouth whilst fitting it, luckily I caught it with my tongue and didn't swallow it, anyway touch wood not had any issues but still early days.

Depends. If u have a RC on nhs expect it to need redoing.
Do it privately with an older experianced endontontist* and you will keep that RCed tooth for ever.

This...

Have a root canal... You don't grow new teeth! keep on to them whilst you still can!

Edit... When I had mine done... I fell asleep in the chair (no gas or anything) and the dentist (Ex german military dentist) had to ask me to wake up and keep my mouth open!!! (And I hate the dentist!)

Had root canal, not a nice experiemce, few months later tooth shattered and had to have a crown anyway

will go straight for crown next time I think

Having trouble with a root canal at the moment, dentist has drilled the tooth 4 times & found a fourth root too small to get at. I'm at the stage now where he's offered to refer me to a specialist for another £600-700 treatment or just to crown it to see how it goes.

Absolute rip off merchant, both my sister & I have noticed how they've been pushing for extra non-essential treatments lately and are going to get registered with an NHS dentist instead.

Rant over.

I have to have 2 of these, but I'm waiting to be referred as i want to be put to sleep to have them done. Yes im a wuss when it comes to pain. :(
