Rosberg retires with immediate effect

Why are you going on about salt?

It was just a general comment (about internet reaction to Rosberg winning) about how many people are trying to devalue someone's life work, just because he beat their favorite driver. The various excuses, some relevant, some not to try and say that Rosberg is an undeserving winner.

It's pathetic really. Especially considering, a similar argument can be made about Hamilton 2008 title or Alonso's 2005 title etc.

To be honest i think all Mercedes care about are 1-2's and winning the constructors title so they will take whoever will give them that. I've got a funny feeling that the young drivers will be overlooked... But then again even if this is the case as long as its a current driver that goes to Merc a space is freed elsewhere and the cycle starts again.

At least it gives us all something to disagree about until next season. :D

If none of the old World Champions got the job I'd like to see Kamui Kobayashi have a go, the Sauber was never up to the job, it would be interesting to see him in a decent car.

He'd probably make for a good team mate for Hamilton whatever happens on the track.

I doubt this will happen. :D

Hamilton had championship winning drives in 2008, like Silverstone where he outclassed the entire field by a mile in the wet, showing up seasons professionals for how to cope in wet weather.

Rosberg hasn't had a single 'epic' drive this year, he hasn't had a single epic move. He's had 4 or 5 gifted victories in the fastest car where the other Merc started 10th or below with zero chance to win, and another few wins mostly in tracks where either Hamilton was hit in the first corner or had a bad start.

I don't think he ever 'won' a race by being less than 1st into the first corner(s) and passing someone to take a victory.

People like to make out that Hamilton was gifted the win at the end by Glock in 2008 but the reality is until Glock decided to stay out on dry tires when almost every other driver decided to pit for inters, Hamilton had it won. When people make the entirely wrong call on tires it often bumps them up for a lap or two them causes them to look like idiots, it doesn't matter it was the last lap or not. Hamilton actively won multiple races that year with some brilliant drives, Rosberg can't be said to do the same.

Despite multiple failures, despite having to start at the back for Spa, despite Rosberg hitting him twice he was still leading by was it Germany, then Malaysia happened again giving Rosberg an unassailable lead.

It's got nothing to do with being a Hamilton fan or not. If you take out the races Hamilton had a failure in qualifying, the race or Spa starting from the back to make up for said engine problems, Rosberg got thrashed in race wins and thrashed in qualifying while not putting in a single genuine championship winning drive at any stage of the season. Even considering Hamilton's reliability problems Rosberg still lost on race wins and qualifying.... despite an effect 4/5 race head start.

Any F1 driver is a sod. They have to be to get where they are. It takes some massive self belief and simply unprecedented drive to get to that position and "nice guys" just do not get to the top.
Some just have better public persona's than others.
Debating F1 drivers based on off track behaviour is just a bit odd really.

It's like comparing race horses on their coat colours.

On track is where is counts, and where world champions are made.

Fair play, he could have milked it for a season of good money. If his heart isn't into it and doesn't feel he can compete at the top again then smart man. If only so many others had the bravery to do the same and not just take the money settling as a no 2.

Webber
DC
Rubens
Massa

and so on.

Maybe he will just be offered more money though and that's what this is about. I hope not.

Even if a top driver goes there it will be difficult against a driver who has been there a few years but then again if a putz like Rosberg can run him close for 2 of 3 years even with reliability on their side a better driver will really have Lewis upset.

Let's not forget Lewis was on the verge of quitting mercedes this year because of a driver like Rosberg, someone who can really push Lewis and not give him so many easy wins will really get to him. For that reason Mercedes should just employ another rosberg and just let lewis get on with winning.

I'd love to see riccardo in it myself

I really really don't want to see button in there. I don't think alonso is a good choice (but would be fun to see)
Drivers are going to be chomping at the bit and cursing any binding contracts (alonso lol)
I also don't want it to be vettel. He's been a moaner all season and tbh, not brilliant anyway.

Stick DR in it, solid driver, good attitude, won't cause hassle. My favourite driver too lol

Good decision, but not brave. As said, doubtful he will win again, doesn't need the money. Makes sense really. And if family time is important, all the better. Neve really disliked nico. But then I've never been a Hamilton fanboy

Oh give it a rest, not all Hamilton fans are by default devaluing Rosbergs lifetimes work.

Fair play to him, most people just keep going until the bitter end.

End on a high, got one over on lewis an then closes the door :D

Be nice if they paired Button & lewis back up for a cheeky season.

My choice would be alonso as there's still fire in him and he would try so hard.

Whoever it will be Lewis is champ next year for sure!

I admire him for going out on top. I think he done it for the right reasons.
The end of last season, when he knew he could beat Hamilton he had to up his game and that meant totally focusing on his job, it must have taken a lot out of him to achive his ambition.

You dont become world champion by luck.

I'd like to see button go there!

Well reading between the lines:

"We have lost a champion, the best driver of 2016," added Lauda. "It won’t be easy to replace him because all the drivers of a certain standard have contracts with other teams.
“Taking a young driver is a risk, we don’t know if he will be strong.”

I would say that they will end up with a driver who is NOT currently under contract. But you never know. I should imagine there will be harsh financial penalties for any current driver who defaults on his contract in order to join Mercedes, not to mention the bad blood that would ensue.

Hulkenberg must be absolutely kicking himself for signing a deal to drive that donkey of a Renault. I'd have loved to see him in a good car.

I don't think Wolff or Lowe could handle a driver as fiery as Alonso.

I can't see Button coming back either. He'd checked out mentally for the last 3 or 4 races.

My money's on Wehrlein.

i doubt vet or alonso would have contactual issues. alonso has always had very good get out clauses and i have no doubt vet had teh same.

So want it to be Vet. LH has gone head to head in same machinery with others, time for Vets turn.

JB does make a lot of sense this late for a single season, personally would like to see it, but its certainly far from the ideal solution.
