Hi all,

Really need some help here. Doing a favour for my parents, and have done a few bits and bobs to their pc, including replacing their BT voyager 105 with a nice little Linksys ADSL modem, http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-059-LS&groupid=46&catid=115&subcat= .

Everything has gone fine, except from getting their pc to "see" the router. Got the pc at my house at the moment, and it cant see my router either.

Might be a noobie question (im not proud), but do I need to set up XP in any way so as to use an ADSL router? Can't even get into the routers settings page (192.168.1.1 one). Really need some help here.

Many thanks

Thats not an ADSL modem? thats a cable modem or just a gateway?

Anyway have you made sure the pc is getting an address from dhcp (ipconfig /all from command promt?)

Ah then not sure why overclockers have labled it a ethernet modem.

Anyway

When you plug in the cable to the router, the computer gets assigned something called a dynamic address.

To check this you can go to start > run > type cmd > press enter > type ipconfig /all and see the network settings. Make sure the computer is assigned an IP Address. (192.xxx.xxx.xxx)

To add to that, once your computer has a dynamic address look for the default gateway. This is the address of the router because not all routers have the same address (192.168.1.1) like you said in the first post.

comes back with nothing... Example:

D:/.............ipconfig/all

Windows IP Configuration

D:/

Is the LAN turned on in the control panel > network connections ?

Yup, on a "1394 net adaptor".

Says its connected, at 400mbps.

Thats the wrong one, you need one saying local area connection. If it has not got that then its not installed or is disabled.

controlpanel > system > hardware > device manager > networking adaptors
