Router for Uni Network

I've noticed a lot of people with routers set up in the uni residence so I decided to try mine, an old Netgear WGT624 so that I can use my Sonos speaker. However for whatever reason mine doesn't work. It seems to just loop on the Uni's authentication page. So I'm just wondering is there a setting I need to change to get it to work or should I be looking at getting a new router as this one is too old? Not too clued up on networking.

Thanks

The network may control the number of connected devices using MAC addresses. If it does you can try changing the router's MAC address to match a device you've previously had working. Your neighbours with working routers should be able to tell you whether this is necessary.

You will also need to ensure that your router is using a different subnet to the network you're connecting to.

Adding your own router may break your T&Cs for having the connection.

I tried that and it worked thanks,

Only problem now is that my router seems to disconnect every 2-5 minutes, any advice on that?

Thanks

A few unis to exactly what bremen said, usually a limit of 4-5 MACs per port within a given time period, usually a week or month. But, if your router is dropping off the network and then reconencting fine, I'd say it's not a uni network issue. If they were annoyed by any breach of policy they'd have banned your routers MAC and you would be getting an e-mail from your personal tutor or even head of dept.
Check your router isn't trying to do anything dim like acting as a dhcp server on the uni network (they WILL ban your ass for that). Also, your could try not using the WAN port, but this may defeat the point. Make the setup as simple as possible to troubleshoot; no dhcp, cut down to one test device (laptop) and give that a static private IP.
