Made a thread on this a while ago, but now Ive now got all my facts straight. The mobo is an Asus A8N-E. When I plug my router (Netgear DG834G v2) into the mobo, it is not recognised, and no new network connections appear in Network Connections (Win XP) . It is enabled in my BIOS.
Does anyone know what this can be? Is it more likely to be a hardware or woftware problem?
The light emitted out of the back when I plug it into the mobo is amber. Does this have any significance?

If you are talking about the router and not the network card and you are using the built in Windows firewall then try enabling UPnP in the Windows firewall, if UPnP is enabled in the firewall then try enabling UPnP from the router settings.

Assuming it is an ethernet cable you wont see a new connection appear. Check device manager that your onboard lan connection is ok. Go to the command line & run ipconfig /all once the router is plugged in & tell us what you see.

Im having to use a Netgear WG111v2 to connect to the router.

I unplugged it and tried ipconfig and it just came up with "windows IP configuration" and that was all.

Windows Firewall is enabled with uPnP enabled, and uPnP is also enabled in the router settings.

The network cable is fine as its worked on my previous desktop.

DOes the ethernet adaptor show up under device manager ok? what about under start > settings > network connections? Any difference when it is unplugged? I would expect to see something like:-
Ethernet adapter LAN:

Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected

No it doesnt show up at all. Its built into the mobo but theres nothing in device manager.

Odd, even if the drivers were missing then you should see a question mark under network adaptors in device manager. Have you checked the bios? The lan could be disabled in there..
If not try a pci network card.

No network connections will appear, its not a plug and play sort of thing. Can you tell us what you have listed when you go into network conections? Maybe a screenshot will help.

Which side is the amber light on? Is it solid or flashing. If its solid, it usually means it connected but running at a slower (10mb) connection.

Lets start with the basics and go from there.:)

Sorry to bump this thread, but I just gave up in the end as it was xmas, I went on holiday, been really busy, etc...usual excuses!
Ive got a new router (another netgear router, but a sky broadband version) and my pc still isnt recognising that the network cable is plugged in. Therefore I can rule out that its not the router, but the pc at fault. I am connecting via a USB dongle (as stated above) to the router.
As before, there is nothing showing in device manager.

this wont help at all, but i have two network ports on my ip35-pro, but i can only get on the net with one of the ports. ive no idea why and ive never figured it out, but one of the ports will give me local access only and a weird ip address. the other is fine:) weird lol

Are you sure that the onboard NIC is enabled in the BIOS, if it isn't then it won't show even as an unknown device in DM.

EDIT: Forget that, just read the first post again...

as stated above, you need to install chipset drivers for your mobo, and clear away all those yellow exclamations , it isn't normal to leave a computer in a state like that.

To be honest they werent like that not so long ago, but its not my computer anymore, I gave it to my family to use. Im hoping that they will all clear once I install the chipset drivers.

If it is enabled in the BIOS and the (correct) drivers are installed, and there is STILL nothing appearing in device manager its quite possible that the chip is duff, have you tried using a (PCI) NIC card??

Does the port have any lights adjacent to it? to they light?

an employed spaZZZ...

If he's getting an orange light when he plugs the cable in, it at least suggests a physical link.

It's still possible, particularly if the cable is miss wired. I had a problem at work with an improvised network point, the person who'd installed it had made exactly the same mistake at both ends. It tested fine on the cable tester and it behaved like it was working up until the point where you tried to send any data.

However in this case it's obvious that the guy hasn't installed the drivers.
