Router with VPN server

There's only information there for IPSec.

If you're using any other VPN type (L2TP/IPSec, OpenVPN, etc.) you'll presumably loose the hardware encryption?

From what I think I remember reading, it will work fine for L2TP/IPSEC but MikroTik do have a somewhat lacking approach to OpenVPN with the fabled v7 being banded about for "full" implementation. (I think).

Irrelevant to my question

Your initial response to my recommendation was irrelevant and was opinion based rather than fact. You've been quoted performance figures twice (by separate people) yet are still arrogant enough to believe you are correct.

Truth is, I don't have OpenVPN figures for the router, I have never needed them and I won't be for some time yet.

Why don't you provide some that shows it won't make it to 3 figures? During your research you may actually form an educated opinion before chirping comments about past products and assuming they are still reflective of current kit (yeah I admit the previous gen versions would barely hit double figures).

The Draytek 2762 AC will do the job, they cost around £140.

Thanks for all the help guys, I've gone with the Draytek mentioned here (thanks). The windows VPN broke again yesterday so I've ordered this as I know I can quickly get it working.

It is interesting as I didn't realise the processing power required for running VPN, I install CCTV and usually try and make customers go the VPN router rather than port forwarding and luckily haven't hit any bottleneck that I've noticed yet. I will keep it in mind for sites with faster fibre and hardware with enough power to decode images fast enough to use it all.

Cheers. :)

The hardware encryption is for specific VPN encryption methods what’s your point?

L2TP over IPSec could probably still be hardware accelerated.

Mikrotik OpenVPN support sucks. If you want OpenVPN get something else.

Why are you even arguing this over a cheap Mikrotik router?
