ideally the MG ZR... what are they like compared to a focus? it's very possible it might be my next car but after asking around no one owns one...:o

no one owns them for a reason mate. I learnt to drive in one. The gear knob fell off lol and it was in getting repaired quite abit. My mate owned two, The first seemed ok the 2nd fell to bits. Interior imo is shocking, Id still be looking at a focus tbh.

You will hear it mentioned here also. They run the K-series engine so if not looked after you could end up with head gasket failure.

On the flip side... when pushed imo they are very capable in the twisty's ive never pushed a focus to compare on that tho.

Foci handle very very well, I certainly wouldn't buy a 25 based on handling alone as you'll cry yourself to sleep every night :p

They are actually pretty fun to drive, don't handle bad at all. Reliability is an issue, as is the fact that they are basically a 15 year old design now. Interior is, erm, interesting too.

The handling doesn't fix the reliability issues or the poor build and interior quality. A Focus would be as good if not better and it won't drive you mad with rattles and squeaks.

I've got one. 1999 v reg 1.4 83bhp. Handles well and feels fast enough for a 1.4 (can be modded to 100 ish with a throttle body). Interior isn't anything special but I don't have any nasty noises/squeaks. Not perfect but I'm more than happy with mine!

Buy a focus/mondeo and be done with it. If you don't want to do it bank transfer me the money and I'll deliver a Focus or Mondeo to your house :p

if you can bring me a license too i'll do it. :p

mondeos looking favourite simply because of availability. for every 100 mondeos for sale theres 10 fiestas and about 2 focii. fiesta would be ideal then focus then mondeo but we'll have to see. :) rovers just appeared to be in my budget and plenty of them. now i know why lol.

I'd say

"fun to drive, can be tedious to own.." sums it up better personally.

Had one for 3 years or just over, not neccessarily through my own choice either so i'd have every reason to stick the knife in and **** them off, but i'd still say they're a lot more exciting to drive than pretty much any focus.

Sod "if cared for", you will get head gasket failure at some point, on mine i started getting some random faults too like ignition taking ages to wake up when starting etc, as said, tedious but fun when all is well! The interior is pretty laughable/dire, bits of plastic falling off when adjusting the electric windows etc. I imagine the mg zr 160's are a hoot too and will still pull 40mpg on a motorway run nps. Women like them a lot more than 330i's too unless its the guys cheque book they're after ;)

Since you can pick early ZR's and 25's for pennies compared to other makes, you can (or at least could) got a lot for your money.

I personally wouldn't recommend them if you can get something decent for the same money,

Owned one for 3 years - mine's fun to drive and very capable (essentially a slightly less harcore ZR160) but the interior isn't built very well although it's actually a nice place to be IMO. Certainly a damn sight easier on the eyes than any Mondeo I've been in around the same age.

But unless you can grab a bargain, not really a sensible choice. I'll be going elsewhere for my next car unless I can bag a decent ZT190+.

EDIT: bobert50: Igition problems like faulty starter motor connection? Heh, been through that one a couple of times! 2p to fix, but irritating!

I can't imagine what sort of women would express a preference of an MG ZR over something like a 330i. Most would either simply not care, which is most likely, or associate the 330i as being a tidy, smart car and the ZR being some sort of boy racer shed.

You must go after some classy birds

If you're looking at 25's then get the diesel, L series engine is very good and avoids the whole HGF problem!
