After my posts here, I don't think you have to worry about me being the purchaser!

For that sort of money, you won't go far wrong.

I Just wish I could change your mind! :D

You may still have the chance, thanks to aqw ive found out some more info on the car.

He has been tring to sell the car on rovertech aswell and his descrption of it differs from the one ive read, ive mailed the seller about it and depending on his responce i might pass this one up.

Crap, what have I done?! :( lol

Hope it all turns out kosher :)

what you have done is possibly save me a 320mile roundtrip :( , but ill wait to hear what he has to say before deciding  .

But dont worry if i dont go for this one ill still look at rovers as a possible car. :D

ive had a few rover 600s, and the DRIVE of these cars is brilliant tbh, much better than the mondeos ive owned etc, i currently use a rover 600 SDI turbo derv as my work car, this car has had abuse for 40k solid now with nothing to go wrong with it [touch wood :D]. i think they drive very smooth and are very comfy to drive [IMO].

having said that mondeos are also nice cars aswell, very cheap to fix, you cant really go wrong with them.

"Its a Rover....the engine is barely ticking over....its a Rover..." ;)

Na in all honesty, the turbo Rovers are the ones i'd ever get near to simply because you pay so little for so much performance.

After having some trouble with my lude ive been looking at getting a new(second hand) car something fast and fun..........

After looking for awhile ive come across a 1998, 620ti, 67k miles. Im very tempted buy this car and will probably go and look/buy it over the weekend.

What does everyone think of this car?
What should i lookout for when buying one of these brutes?
How much should i expect to pay for it?

Basically convince me to go for it or to run a mile, and if i do go for it what i should lookout for.

Thanks

S.

I HAD A 620TI As a company car for about 6months. This one had been lowered with 17's though.

it s was a bery nice car tbh.....0-60 in 7.5ish and a nice inside. I'd buy another if the budget was appropriate!

We had a 620ti in at my work, only 39k miles and the clutch was slipping. Put a new clutch on it to find an annoying whine from the gearbox.
Unfortunately it seems to suffer from a weak gearbox just like the rest of the rovers. Lets hope their head gaskets are better!!
Its not that great on fuel either, although probably better than scoobys and the likes. Nice cheap fun if you get a good one, but like our mondeo man (who will only recommend mondeo's) im a honda man, who can really only recommend one of them. Yes you take a hit in ** wallet when it comes to parts, but performance wise you can't go wrong with a VTEC! Hardy little engines that can still give lots of smiles/miles to the gallon. Oh, and even in a straight drag the VTI civic is quicker than the rover ti. Probably the rovers weight killing it!
N/A ALL THE WAY!!!

well the seller just got back to me, and ive not given up on it yet. The most most important issue was a simple missunderstaning.

There are still a few points i need to confirm with him before going to see it mostly body work issues that i would like to see pictures of.

But there is one thing that consurns me a bit. He says the exhaust is blowing a bit should this be something to worry about? problems with the turbo? or just the exhaust has a hole?

realscot, if the clutch went in 39k then it sounds like it'd had a hard life. When you rag cars hard for 39k, things do tend to wear out ;)

Shadez, that's good to hear. I thought it might have been about the bodywork.

A blowing exhaust could just be a tiny gap between two joints. Nothing a bit of exhaust paste won't fix :)

Since the VTI civic is a smaller car that wouldnt suprise me, but i cant see it being quicker than the Ti' even so.

The car which Honda produced to compete with the 600 would be an Accord (shock, shock, identical cars!) of which they did a slur of bland engines and wouldnt keep up with a 600Ti.

A 220 or 420 turbo which would have been Rovers model to compete against a Civic VTI, are quicker by far.

The Accord Type R with 217bhp goes against that bland comment. I dont think Honda built it to compete with a Rover 600 either.

In that age group, thought the Accord R was a newer model?

Rover 600 ran 93-2000 according to parkers, then the Accord model with the type R was the 98-2003 run of the car, so it is really a later model and isnt really in the same price range, they command quite a bit of money even now.

And im almost certain they didnt consider the 600 as a competitor to the Type R. When they produced the bog standard accords im sure they did.

As per the post above, the 98-03 Accord (the one that had the Type R variant) had nothing to do with the Rover 600.

Rover 600s seem alright aslong as you don't crash it.

I thought you were stating the whole Accord range tbh.

I dont see how you were stating Honda produced the Accord to compete with the 600 when the 600 is based from a Honda Accord anyway. It was a joint platform venture where Rover help with styling to get Honda into Europe.

I have seen those pictures of that 620Ti somewhere, and I'm sure it wasn't Rovertech (I never visit that site), I was toying with the idea of either a 620Ti or a Volvo 850 T5 at the time and am pretty sure I saw it on Piston Heads.com

 that would hurt

looking at the vid its not the same revision of the car i would be buying, its a older pre 97? version dont know if that would make any difference

!!

All things aside mind you, Id take the Rover - Assuming these problems you mention are nothing to worry about. Never really liked Mondeo's myself.

Update

Looks like any chance of a sale has gone, he's asking WAY more than the car is worth and doesnt want to budge enough on the price.

he's asking £1000 for a car whos book price is about £800-900, the car aslo requires a new windscreen, has major keying damage across 2 pannels, some pealing laquer and a blowing exhaust. (none of this is evedent from the advert, and only the fact it had some keying damage is mentioned)

taking all this into consideration i offered what i though was a reasonable price £550 (£850 -£200 for the bodywork damage and - 100 for windscreen and exhaust) i was expecting abit of haggleing from him and end with a price around £650.

He just sent me back a email saying "how about stop wasting my time!", so unless he reconsiders his possition i dont think he will be selling the car for a long time.

Back to looking at cars for me, mainly 620ti's and mondeo ghia x's (any thing else anyone would recomend)

[edit]
just contacted again by the seller so there is still hope :D

to be honest, i wouldnt buy a car where the pic was taken next to some chav in a hooned-up CRX wearing a burbury cap, and a hoody.
