I was shocked the other day when I sent two letters 1st class and the price of a stamp is £1.70. You'd think being this expensive, you'd get some modicum of service at least.

I posted 2 letters 1st class on Thursday of last week and here we are 7 days later and neither letter has arrived. I thought, "lets post it early" as they are birthday cards and anniversary cards, but there is no sign of them so I am majorly miffed. Thinking back, I seem to get very little mail these days including hospital letters, which I know they have sent that just don't turn up at all. What is going on, do they still have employees who can't be bothered to do their job and just burn the post instead?

Is there an alternative as they are less than useless. The post that does come is usually folded in half and rammed into the letter box, so cards etc are ruined.

You can use DPD, FedEx, UPS, Dx etc. They’ll make £1.70 seem cheap but you might get a better service in return.

I posted a large letter yesterday which had photocopies of documents in it, sent RM special delivery, cost £9.25

Prices have gone up for most couriers now especially RM.

To be honest when you think about it £1.70 to deliver a letter to someones door in one day is very cheap.
the problem with less letter getting sent each day and costs going up everywhere RM are going to have to raise prices.

I had an extremely important letter to send the other day so sent it special delivery. The cost of postage and an A4 envelope was £10. At least it arrived next day.

But they aren't delivering a letter to someone's door in one day. That's the issue.

I quite regularly post letters and stuff by RM, and 90% if them don't get there within 3 days, let alone one day.

TO be honest, for £10 I could have driven the card to both locations and the only cost would be time. It wouldn't have cost me £10 in diesel. Wish I had now.

Its not so much the price as the total lack of service. I can well believe a quarter of letters never arrive being that I rarely get hospital appointments or bank documents. This leads me to believe that they are getting in the cheapest labour they can and they are burning letters (again)

That’s kinda the point. £1.70 is arguably not enough to satisfy the USO. They need some combination of increased prices, government subsidies or reduced service expectations.

RM has been losing hundreds of millions a year and it's because of the letters while upstarts have been grabbing the profitable parcel business.

Getting fined 21m for missing letter targets... yeah, that'll really make it worth doing.

It should never have been privatised in the first place.

Its especially crazy when you think 5 years ago a first class stamp was 76p

I sent a tracked package to Monaco, it cost me under eight quid by Royal Mail and was delivered in three days.

Can't complain about that.

Also, I've never, ever had an RMSD package fail to be delivered next day before 13:00.

Show off :p

I've had an RMSD package delivered before 13:00, but to the completely wrong address a couple streets away.

Amazing service that.
