I cant belive I am debating my job like were the witch in the Village.
I was merely asking why you thought the given description of your job was "utter tosh".
Given that many of you work long, arduous hours; do you do more then post letters? Do you require extensive, expensive training? Do you not post advertising material through peoples letterboxes? Is the ability to read not a pre-requisite, or is this covered in training?

Most of the time you do (in my experience) but it's considerably more expensive

RM workers aren't that bad off, try telling your woes to a loader in a warehouse on a few pence over minimum wage - 8 hours shifts chucking 15kg parcels into a truck is a harder work than most postal jobs.
Posties may get the bad weather, but they also get the good weather, factory / warehouse workers sweat to death in the summer and freeze in the winter.
On the whole I can see why postal workers strike - they've got one of the best unskilled jobs in the UK and they want to keep hold of what they have.

I'm over 30 and I'm an ex-postie .. expecting that were you?
And a Union. A lot of people work longer, for less pay and can't do anything about it because they can't join a union, or don't have one backing them up.

It's not going to improve the service! The changes Royal Mail intend to bring in will move deliveries to a later time, within a few years it may be delivery between 9am and 5pm. That way it will be easier to use all the imigrants to deliver the post that we have here. So some people may find their post dumped or delivered by temps, who should they feel oh **** this i'm leaving won't be likely to be reprimanded unless they are caught at the time. It has happened before where post was discovered dumped months later by temps, too late then to prove who it was.
As for modernisation does that mean postman are paid for the petrol they use in their own cars?? Or does this mean Royal Mail intend to buy vehicles for use on delivery?? Jesus Christ!! If thats the case the postage will go up to MODERN prices or about 50p for a first class stamp!
Damn! I'd better post my Christmas cards NOW!! Before modernisation kicks in!

I don't get it. I work in a skilled and reasonably paid job. If I didn't turn up to work, I'd be sacked.
Why do other industries have workers who think that not turning up to work is an acceptible thing to do, and why is it accepted?
This isn't a troll, it's a serious question. My employer is doing me a service by employing me and helping pay for my food and bills. I provide a service in return. If my employer has no more use for me, I can find work elsewhere. Why isn't this true here, and how come I'm the one who is negatively affected by not having any mail delivered?

Yes we actually have to sort the mail out into the fitting which can take around 2hrs or so, this takes about 1/2Months to learn, this is done every day & is the first job you usually do, you have to prep the mail etc make sure it’s all sorted into bags, (my walk there is 7 bags which weigh roughly 20Kgs each not including all the packets) if you look at the advertising most of it will be addressed those that are not we get paid for, you should only receive this once per week, sort the redirects out etc the list goes on its just not about 'walking & posting a letter' a lot of preparation goes into each walk!

LOL, it's hardly brain surgery and let's be honest, most of the time mail is late, misdelivered or damaged, as I said, minimum wage work.

Of course I wasn't a postman, jeez, give me some credit. (I am actually over 30 though) but unlike your average post man, I worked hard my entire life to better myself and get a satisfying, well paid job which doesn't require me to stuff flyers through people's letter boxes at whichever hour I choose.
Which does nothing to prove it's not an unskilled job. And, as an unskilled job, the pay is good.
How on earth does it take 2 months to learn how to sort mail? Mind you, given the amount of incorrectly delivered mail, maybe RM need to update their training procedures.
Granted, it's physically demanding, that does not make it skilled.

hahaha, my job is just has hard as yours and i spend just as much time on my feet (i'm not a shelf stacker, i was for 6 months before doing my knee), so get a grip if you think my job is so totally easier than yours, and i get paid poor wages compared with a posty, but we don't complain, we get on with it, because some money is better than no money(btw, i've been solid at the same job for over two years now, gone through my fair share of problems including losing wages to the incompetance of the pay role staff, losing out on holidays because they can't afford to let me have them off, over 40 hour weeks when we were short staffed, damaging my knee due to the hard conditions etc etc etc, don't try to lecture me you arogant berk)
I'm not a Postman, I have a good job, but, for the record I have been both a postman and a shelf stacker in my life and I know which is harder.
If you think working more than 40 hours a week or not getting your wages on time is a 'problem' you've got a wake up call in the pipeline sonny. You've been a whole 2 years in the job? Well pardon me for questioning your credentials, you deserve a bravery medal, the kind they give to spazs for dragging themselves from hoplessness all the way up to mediocrity.
