Royal mail unpaid delivery fee scam, nearly got me!

I’m a little confused to why these sorts of scams can’t be traced. Why do they allow an anon service.

It must link back to someone responsible along with bank details and digital transfers.

There must be a way to stop these types of scams there has to be!

I have read that bank accounts are been purchased along with PIN numbers and people are using bank accounts n then they go out to take out the cash from the cash machine.

I ignore any incoming email/text or phone calls, with anything accounts wise.

they’ll send me a letter via post if it was really that important.

My dad (in his late 70's) fell for this scam a couple of weeks ago. He filled in the bank account info to pay the £1.40. A few minutes later he got a call from Santander fraud dept saying someone was trying to transfer several thousands pounds from their account, so he went through the process with them to stop this. By coincidence, my brother phoned and spoke to my mum on her mobile while this was happening and she explained what had happened. My brother was a little worried so he phoned and told me, at which point I got straight back on the phone to my parents (my dad was off the call by this point) and told them to make a new call to Santander and tell them what has happened and check their account. They eventually got through after being cut off twice, and as I suspected, the initial call from the fraud team was actually the scammer who through the phone call, got access to my dad's laptop, got his bank details then logged into his account and made multiple transfers for thousands of pounds, and finally locked their online banking so they couldn't get it. Fortunately, the transfers were made late in the evening (after 6pm) so they were pending, and the real Santander fraud team managed to stop them and block access to online banking, therefore save all their money!
I was furious that he fell for it, but relieved that they didn't lose their entire savings!!

Was just going to ask that. Imo the biggest deterrent against scams is common sense.

Dunno. The scammers are pros, and can be very convincing. I always assume I'm an idiot, so check.

I've had 4 scam calls this week. Three from btopenreach (who I'm not with) and one from the amazon prime scammers.

I wasted quite a bit of their time the first time the open reach scammers called I always enjoy that.

Hey guys,

Little post of warning!

Got a text from Royal Mail. This came from the same "named" number (Said Royal Mail at the top of the iMessage window) that i've had other non-scam texts from them.

The message alluded to an unpaid delivery fee with a tracking number which works fine when entered into the Royal Mail tracking website.

I entered my name and address details, went to the next page (which looks official) where it asked for my credit card details, and then Sort code and account number which made me think twice about going any further, spoke to Royal Mail on the phone and they confirmed it is a scam.

I've always laughed at people who get scammed with things like this, but having a manic day and rushing about it nearly got it!

Just a warning and to let any elderly or less IT literate people who might fall victim to this! :(

How would royal mail have my phone number?

Also royal mail put a little grey postcard through your door when you owe them money.

You take said postcard to the local depot and pay by card and collect your parcel at the same time.

You didnt check address bar for spoofed domain name?

Download Google Messages and enable spam filtering, if it's not already on by default.

The Phone by Google app does something similar in terms of filtering junk calls.

The above should block the majority of incoming spam.

Aye, I had a Royal Mail message and it went into the spam part of messages.

Not to mention it was a mobile number and said the following:

"Royal Mail: Your package has a £2.99 unpaid delivery fee, to pay this now please visit: unpaid-service-fee.com or your item will be returned to the merchant."

Family member had the same, but it arrived literally a few minutes after they placed an order through a catalogue.

If some mug falls for this more fool them for not being suspicious of the text in the first place

for one how would Royal Mail have your number in the first place

Merchants will enter your mobile number when they book a parcel service so you can receive updates, see image below for legitimate texts from RoyalMail previously with the three on the bottom.

I don't mean to be that guy, but if the URL is wrong then it ain't spoofed.

Was absolutely mental at work with a to do list as long as my arm and the phone constantly ringing, in amongst the chaos I get a text and know i'm awaiting multiple parcels from overseas.

Looking at the URL now it's so obvious but i'm sure we've all been in those moments where your brain is tied up with a million other things.

I'm normally super vigilant but will definitely be even more so now!

The royal mail one must be very prevalent right now. My colleague posted about it the other day, lots of people replied saying they'd had it. I've had a text recently too.

well as constant phonecalls from mobile numbers very similar to my own
I've suddenly started getting one of these every week/every few days. Anyone else? It's hilarious really, says my NI number is about to be suspended or something and I could go to prison lol..

I was furious that he fell for it, but relieved that they didn't lose their entire savings!!
That's awful. If you had a second thoughts about something and then your "bank" called to sort it out. Ugh. Scum :(

But if your not expecting a parcel from Royal Mail why would you even pay attention to the text

again it’s just people being dumb

The one my family member almost fell for was this:

"Royal Mail: Your package has a £2.99 unpaid shipping fee. To pay this now visit: https://royalmail-access-tracking.com. If you do not pay this your package will be returned to sender."

Do you can see why people fall for it.

To me thats obviously fraud but yeah people who dont know what royalmail's actual domain is could fall for that.
