Royal mail unpaid delivery fee scam, nearly got me!

Yeh my mum got caught with this, she was expecting a parcel/letter from overseas and thought this had something to do with it.
Got her to call her bank up and cancel her card and get them to issue out a new one.

Even when I looked at the text, I thought it was for real. I only realised when I went to the website in the text and they were asking for her sort code etc.

I can see a lot of old/not internet savvy people getting caught out by this.

I love the ones that call you.
I totally destroy them. I had one guy in tears asking me to forgive him :cry::cry:

I get scam emails all the time to different addresses. But on a computer its easy to put the arrow over the sender name and it shows the real email address.

It's a shame phones dont have that function too. I can see the temptation to click through the link of the text to go to the website, especially if you havent any way of noting the tracking code down and manually going to the official website in the phones browser.

If you tap on the address it tells you, at least on the Outlook app.

I really feel that phone companies should be doing more to police this given how genuine spoofed number scams can be made to appear going through their networks. :(

Surely there's some way they could prevent telephone numbers being spoofed?

I'm surprised so many fell for this. The only time I've ever remembered Royal Mail contacting me was via a letter for custom fees that I knew was due from past import duties. Never in all my time with online orders have I ever had text from Royal Mail for any delivery. It was always letter related with reference codes.

Even the past 3 - 4 weeks I've been getting these messages on the phone and thought it was fishy. That was when I decided to go looking from the description on the messages then found this. The exact one at the very bottom of the page.

Also seen the 6th entry from time to time.

Never in my life have I received a scam call with an actual person on the other end. How do you manage that? It's always been a robot on the rare ones I have received..

The automated phone call ones tend to be pretty obvious. It's the text message ones in the bbc article article above that tend to look pretty convincing IMO as they spoof the number so can end up being displayed alongside legitimate royal mail notifications by most phones in the text app.

Unless you realise he domain is fraudulent it's not immediately obvious, especially for the less tech savvy or elderly, that it's a scam message.

I always wondered if people tried to mess with them. You know the ones who are human. :D

Is it time for texting to die?
I certainly ignore all texts. The only ones I have to acknowledge are the 2FA some companies use. These come immediately. Everything else is ignored.

Are you guys saying these RM scams appear as the real royal mail text? How is that even possible?

Just checked my box. All I have is one obvious HSBC scam that comes from 07xxxxx

I get so many scam text messages and "have you had an accident" calls that I had to change my mobile number, I still keep the sim card, with this number in an old phone.

The most recent turn of events, is that someone registered the number somewhere as a Female Escort, so sometimes I get funny calls and texts :D:D:D.
