RS4 Rolling Road Numbers - Another View

It's like comparing the B5 s4 and RS4 - same engine essentially but really is not.

Quite strange the variety of power shown on the list!

Well my B5 on the RR pulled 425bhp and 536nm @4500. Not bad for a 9 year old car!

The RS4 engine has direct port injection, the older V8 from the S4 doesn't, this is poss the biggest difference but there are not that many shared parts.

Housey, is there any evidence that the oil coking issue that's appearing has some connection to the loss of power?

The RS4 V8 was developed by Cosworth, I think - the S4 is merely a 'standard' Audi plant (some of the same bits, but generally very different).

I'm very surprised at the difference in power output between all those engines. There must be more than just inaccurate initial values being given by Audi: different fuels, different oil...?

You're thinking of the B5 - afaik the V8 is an audi own thing.

Cosworth did the 2.7v6 and increased from 265bhp to 380bhp with some bigger turbos and intercoolers, rework the inlet and a few more mods. They're good for well over 700bhp :)

I'm willing to bet they make 414hp brand new (or after a few hundred miles)

I think the valve coking then causes a power drop off.

they will make 414bhp when tested in an engine test cell at the relevant DIN/ISO standard, it is vey hard to cheat these figures and ou are in a lot of trouble if you do get caught. however it diesnt mean that if the engine isnt tested the same way you will get the same result. we struggle to get our chassis dyno to match our test cells and that is with a fully enviromental chamber chassis dyno.

most ecus now use torque based model calibrations so they are far more sensitive to environment than map based ecus and running them on most rolling roads will lead to large drops in power mostly due to the heat. keeping the air intlet temperatures especially at the level them would be found at when the car is driving around requires incredibly large air flow (think wind tunnel)

I'm not convinced any of them will hit 414bhp but I think the coking issue is becoming a major issue as owners start to see it as a common theme and become more and more wound up about it. I wouldn't be suprised if it starts cropping up on Watchdog before too long.

I agree, the RR 'culture' has created a lot conjecture from people who don't appreciate the limits of a RR and how its numbers are calculated and the way environmental issues and other 'stuff' can impact on the measurements they provide.

the numbers are bogus:

they are extrapolated from wheel HP
the 2 cars making rated HP, were tuned by the tuner offering the dyno day
think about that

the RS4 engine is torque limited in 3rd gear >5000 rpm, and since T = HP x rpm, it can't make rated power...the curves were posted, it does make rated power and torque below 5000...

a R8 and RS4 were dyno'ed on the same day, they made the same power...

an RS4 engine was NEVER removed from the car and tested on an engine stand in the US by a private individual...BS

the only engine stand tests were done by the SAE to certify the engine at 414 HP...the ECE also certified the engine at 420 (DIN or PS)
think about that...independent quasi govermental testing agencies vs a tuner with vested interest...hmmmmm

the car with driver weighs 4100 lbs, it runs ~13/108 1/4's, look at any HP calculator and check the power required....
http://www.stealth316.com/2-calc-hp-et-mph.htm
using 414 and 4100 you get 13.2/108...
using 108/4100 you get 416
using 13/4100 you get 449 (this is skewed a bit due to the awd launch)

guys who ran low 300's on this day, raced guys who ran high 300's and guess what? times were the same...inexperienced drivers ran 13.2/106 in hot temperatures in an avant! (heavier)...330 crank HP won't push 4100 lbs that fast...

if you calculate T and HP using the std mechanical engineering equations you get the rated numbers:
T = V x Mep/4Pi
P = T x w

don't believe ANYTHING you hear, and only 1/2 of what you see...
carry on ;)

Wow, so erudite and eloquent. Talents I’m sure your parents are very proud of. One day when you get out, they might let you see them again. Do you expect to be taken as serious when no one knows who the hell you are? You arrive, you post in a fanboy (and American) style and expect everyone to take what you say as gospel?

Carry on like that and I see you lasting to 10 posts...

my parents are dead....they were proud of me btw

get out of where? who's 'they'?

I expect nothing but crap from the likes of you...

I know who I am, and do not need internet 'cred' to validate my opinions...
respond to them, or not, but regardless, they are valid, yours are not...

I did nothing:
I made a post to refute the gibberish bein profered as 'science'
you posted a stupid picture
I did the same

you're still here after >5000 posts?
what's your point...

American and proud of it...but ignorance knows no borders, you are proof of that...lighten up, it's the internet ;)

hardly a 'fan boy', my first Audi after 3 BMW M3's (e30, 36 and still have my 46)

Done a dyno run on your RS4 then?

nope, they are pointless...

but did make 3 runs, using a $50k certified and calibrated traffic study GPS unit...

avg: 13.2/107.5...
wt, on a calibrated commercial scale 4090 lbs

gentle, mechanically sympathetic launches...and I'm no drag racer...
yet using the most accurate calculator I can reference:

415/4090 yeilds 13.26/108
107.5/4090 = 409 HP
13.2/4090 = 422
avg ~ 415...

Got pictures? and Hovis?

no, but I have the graphed GPS printouts...

and no, I won't give you the satisfaction of showing them...
because I don't care what you think...

I'm not out to, nor am I able to, change peoples minds when they are set in a pattern...this is the internet, any loony can log on ;)

I know this:
I have an RS4, it's fast, fast enough
I have an e46 M3, the RS4 is much faster...

but neither matter, there are bigger issues to fret about...
like my dead parents approval and getting 'out' of somewhere (something), according to Housey lol

You are 12 aren't you?

You can't show the printouts cause you dont have them really do you?

And a few posts back you said you dont have an RS4....... Now you do, been out buying in the past 10 minutes?
