RS4 Vs M3

So im not a big fan of Porsche's that are recent, wouldn't mind having an old one but I wouldn't want a new one and as J1nxy says the Panamera is really not a pretty car in my eyes. Also doesn't the Panamera only seat 4 in the back?

Ive now test driven an RS4, initial thoughts were that it was...nice. It does feel dated inside compared to the M3 but it was very comfortable to drive, ride was nice. Definitely it was quick but it didn't really feel very special, didn't feel sporty in sport (dynamic mode), tbh it felt pretty heavy in the corners. If anything the V8 was a bit quieter than I expected. That said I am sold on the double clutch gearbox, much smoother and easier than I expected having only ever driven terrible dated automatics.

Will wait and see what the M cars bring when I test drive those.

My gut feeling at this moment in time is that this is one of those pipe dream threads where the owner ends up with a 530i touring type thing because it was too good to pass.

I know, I know, you don't like the look of it;) But it would be my choice! In an estate, big boot...maybe not the S, that pushes the price up somewhat. The standard car is more than enough! Still not convincing you am I :P

It's an unusual next step from 6 years in A civic isn't it :p

Can't be many who crave this sort of car enough to drop 60k but until now were happy in an old hatchback.

In fairness our other car is a 350z and over the last 6 years our combined income has gone up about 7-8 fold, probably not many people who are also in that position no? Fox I'm surprised your normally the voice of sensibility here and surely biding your time and saving up the money for what you want rather than desperately scribbling for every stepping stone car is the sensible option for a petrolhead. but equally I remember you telling me I'd hate my civic after 3 years, which I didnt :)

If that's the case you're doing it right. I have made some regrettable purchases in the past from wanting to change so often. However I highly recommend not buying an RS4 or M3 brand new, unless you're craving a very individual spec.

Cheers Panthro, yeah as I said this purchase will probably be end of this year/beginning of next year which is a fair time for the market to change, ive not decided no new or nearly new or as it will be by then 12-18month old. Depends on the deals. Just trying to work out which car I want to get and get my research in early :). I don't think ill want to have millions of options on the car, the other thing I noticed is the M3 has a lot on it as standard which are options on the RS4 - like folding mirrors - seems like a ridiculous thing not to be standard on a 55k car, my civic has folding mirrors!

I haven't driven either, but I prefer the look of the audi. In red.

For the money, personally, I'd probably buy an older db9 or continental get as they are around 30k now :)

Both of which don't have 5 seats, poor rear leg room (im pretty sure my 88 year old nan isn't going to get in either of them, probably even in the front) and fairly miserable boot space (I know the Continental isn't too terrible but still >100L less than what I have now and am looking at). Add that to the fact ill be looking at cars which are pushing on 10 years old and no doubt in another league of cost to maintain even from new never mind at that age...Not really comparable are they.

For the money you may want to test drive the Macan Turbo (if you can, they're hard to find I found) - it's a different car for sure but it's practical, fast and drives superbly - I was really surprised by it on the road and it does feel a little more special to me.

Well the waiting list is about a year so if he puts his name down now it may just work for him.

SQ5 looks quite nice

I drove an SQ5 recently actually (as I'm considering a Macan myself), I found it quite disappointing really, the engine is great but it feels really...boring is the best word I can find. The handling isn't bad per se but it never feels exciting or delivers a sense of theatre (which for that much I think it should). Plenty fast of course but not much 'fun'.

Now that's a fault of many modern Audi's in my view as I've seen the same in the A5 I had as a hire car last month and a new A3 I drove recently.

In comparison it's slightly mind bending to me they have the same underlying platform.

Yeah I felt the same about the RS4, there was no sense of occasion or fun from it in sport mode even, despite this is as very nice and comfortable but I really want something that will do both
