RTS with the best online community?

Is there no matchmaking system?
In SupCom? Yes it's called ranked play and it's on a certain map rotation, mostly small maps and the games are often quite short (<30 mins) unless the players are very evenly matched. There's also custom games which are more relaxed and less demanding and generally last longer.

Btw buy SupCom Gold which has FA included. You can get it for under a tenner.

What makes SupCom great? The depth and the epic scale, but it's also very clever. It just has a fairy steep learning curve. There's plenty of guides to help you out on the GPGnet forums though and you can learn from the best by watching replays, or even getting tutored.

There are also team ranked games as well. But if you jump right into online play in supcom kree you will die and not learn a thing. It really does pay of to do at least one sandbox game alone just to see how the gameplay works through all the teirs.

In something like cnc3 you can just about wing it but supcom takes a fair bit more.

Have now purchased Supreme Commander Gold for £10.90 including first class delivery!

It had better be as good as TA+CC was!

So, with all the epicness of the battles in SupCom, would you guys say the whole micro side of traditional RTS games is lost?

Def not. Its just a different type of gameplay. Im not going to say that micromanagement is non-existant in SupCom, I just love sending horde upon horde of units at an enemy :p If you look at a game like DoW or CoH micro is a lot more important as you are not dealing with masses of units, nor can you produce units at the same rate.

I have starcraft for the perfect micro and timing so I'm hoping supcom will be a nice change of pace and for £11 I suppose I can't really go wrong.

Supcom is hardly a relaxing paced game for the most part. It's the just scale of it which sets it apart from me. There is still micro to help in the battles such as avoiding certain shots and missles but for the most part it's too time intensive if there are multiple engagments going on and you're trying to grow your economy by 5% every minute or something like that.

When you set your gpg net account up add me 'theobinney' so we can play together. I suspect you'll be better than me in about one or two games. I don't tend to play ranked as i play this for relaxation. (talk about contradiction)

Put it this way. In starcraft if you only make about 80 clicks/keyboard presses a minute you're doing badly, 120+ is the average. That's an immense pace for 20 solid minutes of non stop pressure.

I have no issue comp stomping for fun with people if that's what they enjoy. Currently I'm doing that occasionally with kronologic from the console section of ocuk.

I just don't enjoy the pressure from a 1v1 very often. A nice team game is where rts games excell for me. Plus 80clicks a minuite will make you lose even in custom games on supcom, untill really end game that is where it's just select box of 300 units and send them in that direction.

supcomm is very very dull online (sold my copy ages ago) it's just a spam fest devoid of any real strategy
get company of heroes simply the best game ever made let alone best rts.

Not at all, you need to micro your units well to win battles. There are formation options, co-ordinated attacks etc. Plus the ferry points are so handy!

I am without net at the mo due to moving house, but when I get back online next week if anyone fancies a game let me know.

My GPG account is also ninja2000

Edit COH is good but nearly always ends up in a spam tank fest :(

You thought wrong.

It's not a spam fest, sure you need to get units out to compete for mass points in T1, but if you don't start teching up, use good micro and good strategy, spamming will not get you wins except against players who don't know what they're doing.

Also you're talking about ranked games, whereas most games played are custom games which are often nothing like that. I'm guessing you had 2 games, lost both when a better player land rushed you and gave up rather than trying to find out why you lost (usually early build order, economy stall or not agressively fighting for mass points).

Having played the demo of supcom and watched a few pro videos it's definitely a slower pace than StarCraft but remember that's not an insult. I think a lot of you underestimate just how many clicks 120 APM results in (the pros average 300-500 apm).

For instance I never see micro like this in supcom games but tbh I don't want to.: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXq8ukH65GQ
