RTS's... just cant play them. HELP!

I would say that Warcraft II is a good starting point if you're new to RTS's. I played this as my first game in early year 2000. Once you've mastered the humans and orcs, the next game to play would be Age of Empires II. The top-down view changes to isometric and there are more types of units you need to control, plus the numerous available hotkeys makes it more of a two-handed game (mouse + keyboard) than Warcraft II. After that, I personally moved onto Age of Mythology and AOE III which had a similar learning curve. I didn't get to play Warcraft III but I'm not sure whether that was an RTS anyway.

Close Combat is that an old game as I don't know it?

Heroes you only have one small squad to control and it makes use of cover and you can also sort of manually control an individual squad member when shooting. A very good game and I it has aged well. I do know allot of people complained that it was too difficult but I am a wimp and managed to finish it on normal.

hi, it is quite old, but fantastic still - lots of mods, maps, campaign packs, ai improvements, etc; basic review of no. 3 here (3's probably my favourite due to the requisition points system and the units available) i have 3,4,5 of the series.

dow is a simplified version of coh.... spose its a good thing to mention in this thread for people looking to build up their rts skills, but i would never go back to it myself.. coh is the best rts i have ever played and to go back to dow now would seem like a step down

WHAT???

They play near as dammit exactly the same as each other!
Ok, one is Humans v Orcs and the other is Americans v Germans WWII but apart from that, how can you possibly say something like that when the yare exactly the same?

Since playing COH I asked this very same question not all that long ago, and DOW came up... I remembered a mate had it and showed me the intro, but at the time, I didnt give a monkeys for the game... I was given COH because my mate didnt like it, and I asked about DOW from My other mate who also gave me DOW as he had moved on, and in les than a week, I went out and got Winter Assault and Dark Crusade and I love every thing about it.

I have also tried Supreme commander ( absolute pap ) World in Conflict ( Not for me ) and Command and Conquer dont rock my boat.

COH and DOW are my favourites and I suppose that down to the user interface beign spot on for me.?

I bought the triple set for DOW. Love 'em ;) The only reason i don't play COH is because of my system's limitations though!

I think that in dawn of war, if i create loads of troops en masse, my allies seem to do the same. If i concentrate on buildings my allies have hardly any troops.
Maybe it's just me...anyone else noticed this.

alright guys, ive taken all advice in, spent several hours messing about on different games, picked up warcraft III and frozen throne for 5 quid today lol

BUT i eagerly marched foward into CoH... level 3, i did what i was told, acted like it was a real war lol, and bam! I OWNED! such a amazing game once i understood how to control units properly.

so thanks guys for everything :D RTS might just replace my fps addiction lol

Only fight battles which you can win. And if you know you can win then don't watch them win, do something else! Most likely they'll be watching the crappy battlefront while you can secure points or flank them.

in coh u can flank your opponents defenses, you can cut off his resources, you can use special abilities to give youself advantages in skirmishes

in dow u spam regular tactical squad space marines and landraiders and win :)

dow is like playing the panzer elite in opposing fronts u just spam and send your blob at the enemy with little need for any kind of micro

Thing with rts games is in order to become good you must dedicate your gaming time to the one game.
Spreading your time across too many and you become average at all.
That's the only thing i dislike about RTs games too many people are pro's as they dedicate their lives to the game and know everything and exact build order.

I would say you are not crap at it but that everyone else is very very good at it.

I am far from crap.

I agree that in principle, this is true, however, with such games as COH and DOW, they are so close in how they work, that in any given game, if you swapped the US Soldiers for Space Marines and the German Opposition for Orcs, you would really think that you were on DOW and not COH .

They are just so close.

If you can play one... You can definitely play the other with very minimal fuss.

With COH its about gaining a little bit of ground at a time. Securing that and moving on.

Barbed wire is your friend!

i agree with CoH is all about taking 1 point at a time maybe 2 if you have the man power

i play i hard and what i do is before i attempt to take a point i will save the game if the attack fails i will just reload and try again

not the most efficient way but works for me

also very important to keep your units alive and get them up to veteran status

i had veteran snipers and airborne units that i used to call in from previous missions and they where almost invincible

veteran status doesn't mean much in Opposing fronts tho

im the same

but the game i wish i had a clue in/good at is CiV4, i just don't know what the hell is going on in that game

Heh you guys are obviously missing the subtle yet totally game changing differences between dow and coh.. i suggest you play online and see how the game is supposed to be played as i agree if your just playing the single player or ai skirmishes you might very well think coh is just dow with nazi's

lol did C&C RA2 online @ uni and learned the Rush tatics very well after myself and my mate got spanked in a 2v2 vs some greek randoms on the network1

im loving COH: OF more now, played it last night and got a Wirbelwind (deadly on CC3), as well as more tanks and unit upgrades.

i just dont like to be rushed too much n my preparation but the game keeps the pace high to stop you from stockpiling i think.

but i often get caught offguard, i.e viewing one battle only to go to my other group afterwards to find them all dead.. etc..

but im getting better:)

ok, so ive played tons, and i mean tons of RTS's... but i was never good, actualy, come to think about it, im bloody awful lol.

ive just had a crack at company of heroes again, on the 3rd level, taking over the town. i loose 50% of my men after the first few encounters on medium difficulty! this is the same in all other RTS's, i love the idea, the concept, but im just pants at them.

so my question is, is there any sort of bible? walktrhough to the basics of RTS's? something i can read through to get the jist of them. its driveing me nuts!

sending in all my men at once is suicide, i get too fixated on the one group to concentrate on all of them if i try to take a tactical approach... too much css...

thanks, ags

You can pause most RTS games and have a think. If things get on top of you then pause and have a think.

You should by the 3rd to 4th try know how the computer AI is working.

Stop looking at how they your units are fighting all the time and micromanage your units & base instead, hats what I did wrong in aoe 2 for awhile anyhow.
In CoH you have to pay attention once in awhile ( to get yer tanks away from AT etc) but you should be forucussing on controlling the points on the map.

No, I know that there are differences... There are many differences, but there are also a lot more similarities to the games than there are differences.

You ( Not personally, but generally speaking ) seem to make out that I think that if you swapped the Space Marines and Orcs for US & German troops, then DOW will be COH and vice versa, and I know that this is not the real truth.

What I am really saying, is that if you can play one of them, then no matter what, you will be able to play the others with very little trouble. The UI is the same, building up your army is the same... the points system and so on, are all done in exactly the same way.

Tactically they are also very close. too close to make out that they are totally different games when they are quite clearly as close as they are.

I have not played any of them online yet no, but I have been playign them on my LAN againt some mates for some time now, and we are all in agreement that they are pretty much at least 90% identical and are using the very same engine.

The best advice I know in an RTS (especially multiplayer) is to play aggressively, especially against inexperienced players. When you're on the back foot and defending constantly, it's very hard to push back.
