Just for kicks I moved my 215TW into the spare room while my Mother was visiting so she could watch DVDs on it. I went back to my CRT monitor in the meantime. Boy, was that a mistake! I guess I just became accustomed to LCD over time but I logged into EQ2 and immediately noticed how much more responsive it was. I started loading other games and without exception, everything felt WAY better.

I will be using my 215TW as a TV permanently from now on. I am going to order the Samsung 1100MB (CRT) tomorrow. LCD is very nice, but it still has a ways to go. I had said in another thread that I couldnt tell the difference but I was very, very wrong. I still recommend the 215TW, its a great monitor. As a non-stop gamer its just not as good as a CRT for my purposes.

I still have yet to claim insurance for the LUSH CRT I had that died from a leak in the roof. I'll call up tomorrow actually! :p Thanks for the reminder :D

I got my old CRT out yesterday just to try it again. I was also able to tell instantly how responsive and smooth it was. CRT definitely better than TFT for gaming although it's not practical for me on a day to day basis.

Yah, its only when you go back that you notice the difference. I would have never known. The difference is too much for me. I have a 37" LCD TV for watching movies etc. I just dont think LCDs are ready for gaming yet.

I purchased a samsung 215tw a few weeks ago and my first reactions was that it was amazing, the styling, contrast ratio, image quality etc all really nice, *BUT* I do play farcry and UT2004 online a lot and I started noticing that I was'nt as good as I used to be and practicly never pulling head shots off :( , I decided to try out my old 19inch LG tft and WOW what a difference, sooooooooo much more responive than the 215tw, so much so in fact that I now gone back to using my LG and have put the Samsung on my old secoundry computer for now, I did only pay £250 for the samsung so I can't complain,

what I like to know if possible, input response wise what is the fastest 20" ws tft, I don't mind what type of panel it is as long as it's no worse than an LG L1950S which is what I'm currently using now and very happy with performance wise, just a shame it's not widescreen

The NEC has the fastest "real life" response time out of the ones I tried. I have owned: Dell 2007, NEC 20WGX2 and the Viewsonic 2025. The NEC is head and shoulders above the other 2 and IMO well worth the price difference.

The NEC is good, I've played on it at my buddy's house. Its still no substitute for a CRT in terms of gaming. I thought something was wrong with my NFS : MW. The problem was the LCD. I've played NFS : MW on my buddy's NEC and my own 215TW and it feels totally gimped. You only truly notice the difference when you go back to CRT. Something I am SO glad I did.

PS : I am looking for a Sony FW900 24" Widescreen (CRT). So far, no dice. I found one on E-Bay but its in the US and the guy wants $200.00 shipping. If anyone knows where to find these (they are discontinued) Please let me know.

I don't doubt it but I was merely answering the guys question.

A lot of these wide screens suffer from lag, most people don't notice it but as more people (and more gamers) get these WS monitors its getting reported more. Unfortunately most hardware review sites have ignored this problem, and have instead focused on pixel response time, which ignores any other lag induced by data processing (overdrive, faroudja video procesing, whatever).

Based upon info on the various hardware forums the PVA panel based monitors suffer the most, with up to 60ms lag (on the 244T) from when the frame leaves the video card to it appearing on the display (around 3 frames) at 60hz.

TN panels remain the fastest, although their viewing angles are not up to much. So if you can find a 20" WS using a TN panel, it should be responsive. Also if you find the ACER 2051W (marketed as a gamer WS LCD), be aware there is some doubt that it uses a TN panel, and is in fact a PVA. The specs are different depending where you look.

Yep, everyone prattles on about response time and in a lot of cases vis a vis gaming it is irrelevant. The insane lag I got in GTR and NFS : MW is no longer present in any way shape or form on my CRT.

i went from CRT to TFT and back to CRT, you only notice the difference when you go from TFT to CRT, although im tempted to go back to TFT again now that ive quit "competitive" gaming

Yah, if I had not gone back to CRT I would never have noticed. Problem is that the difference is substantial. I could live with it if it was a small difference, but after trying a few games I notice that it is almost night and day in some cases.

I'm quite happy with my own LCD's performance in games. Can't say I've ever noticed any lag or ghosting of any kind, even when looking for it.

Can't say I'd ever want a CRT again, myself. The benefits of an LCD are too good.

Have to agree with Sharkypal, when you do try going back to a CRT it's immediately obvious how much quicker and better for games they are.

Neither screen totally satisfies me. My TFT is great for general windows use and web browsing, but gaming performance is badly compromised. It's slow, it ghosts, you can only use one resolution, and it can't get anywhere near real black. My CRT is too big, too heavy, strains my eyes and uses too much power.

They both suck in their own way. And you would need some sort of massive desk to have both side by side and switch between them. Roll on SED...

Yes, LCDs do have benefits but for me, the fact is that they BLOW for games. You will only ever notice if you go back to a CRT after using an LCD for a while. I love my LCDs size and I like browsing etc on it, its ace. Unfortunately because I am predominantly a gamer, its just not good enough.

Someone mentioned about aiming in Far Cry and for my own edification I tried on both. The CRT is just way more precise. It is a far bigger struggle to aim on the LCD. It is immediately noticeable.

I am not saying LCDs are bad. I am just so surprised at the difference between CRT and LCDs in games. I love my LCD and I am keeping it for movies etc, I just wont be using it to game anymore.
