Rugby union?

I think it was likely made up. Why would the oppressed minority act like this? It wouldn't surprise me if it happened the other way around.
It's more likely an oppressed minority would lash out. Trust me there's much less racism coming from the majority in this country than most other countries. Check out "xenophobic violence" in SA.

The actual explanation is more likely a misunderstanding of the Afrikaans for left hand side. For the uninitiated the majority of the population can speak Afrikaans.

What’s the Afrikaans for left hand side?

I can’t tell if you are kidding. Ethnic minorities are often massively racist and very openly as well. Not wanting their children to date outside of their group etc. It’s just accepted for some reason.

And you think in the heat of a rugby WC semi final an England player racially abused a SA one and then decided to draw attention to himself by claiming it was the other way around. Come on son.

Resident South Africans on Reddit have postulated a number of alternatives for what he might have said and it does seem possible something was lost in translation. Hopefully we will get to the bottom of it.
South African’s will be desperately hoping he didn’t say it and clutching any straw they can reach to explain it as a miss understanding. Starting a World Cup final with out a recognised hooker would be disaster!

Saffa here who travelled over to Paris with 3 English mates to watch the game.
75 mins of pure frustration and being wound up about EVERY decision that went England's way haha but pulled it off in the end and just super grateful to be a part of the Cup representing my homeland!
