Rugby union?

FFS they are ruining this sport. Everything looks terible in slow motion. They should not be allowed to watch slow mo's on the pitch.

I’d rather have it this way. It was clear as day a foul and, for such an important decision as a red, it gives time to make the decision. Rather than the ref give the wrong card in the heat of the moment they can give a yellow and take the time to decide the correct punishment.

Going to be tough for NZ to come back from this. Will be a shame if the match ends up one sided due to the red from here on, but that's a red every day.
NZ put together some decent attacks after the card, so maybe they can pull something off. They've certainly got the attacking flair to do it, but SA aren't going to lighten up on defence at all.

To a fairly casual fan like me it feels like the margin between allowed and a red card is too narrow.

I would think a red should be only for the most cynical or dangerous play.
I tend to agree, especially when you see at what speed rugby is played. Meaby orange card, 20 minute bin.

You can look at it in reverse. As a rule, head contact is a red, happened to England in the early matches, but it’s not always intentional or there is clear mitigation because of the awkward position etc. in which case it’s a yellow.

If he didn’t throw his weight into it, he might have gotten away with just the yellow. I assume that’s what the review noted.

I've played amateur rugby for 40 years and the speed of decision making even at the low levels for things like tackles an be so quick, heaven knows what it's like at top levels. I've seen in professional and amateur plenty of cynical tackles where people have gone in high deliberately or used no arms. Farrells recent ban was a perfect example. But sometimes the decision making time for the players is so short and the slow mo makes instinct look cynical and plenty of great games have been ruined over the last 5 or 6 years by TMO red cards that show no sympathy for the players reaction time.

If the World Cup hinges on a red card for poor not cynical play and the spectacle is lost we're all losers. I'm a genuine neutral I want to see good rugby not the TMO and bunker system decide the game.
