Rugby union?

Japan looked highly structured for the most part, they just get into their patterns quickly. Very, very well drilled, and fit enough to keep it going at a high tempo.

It would be amazing if they get through to the semis, but I wonder how far into the tournament they can sustain this very high tempo, especially against SA who I think are going to be extra physical against Japan.

What do people think of George Ford dropping to the bench, and playing Farrell/Tuilagi/Slade across the mid-field? Personally, it looks to me that Jones wants to boss the 10 channel, which is a position that Australia are uncertain on player selection. However, Ford has been playing so well, and Tuilagi is better at 13 than 12. I'm also not convinced Slade is at 100%. At least Ford is on the bench to we can revert to Ford/Farrell/Tuilagi if it's not working.

Why does the press always call it 'dropped'? He's not been dropped, he's been picked to finish the game rather than start it on this occasion. Rugby Union starting 15s and substitutions are more about tactics than ability at this level.

Slade is obviously top quality and wouldn't have been picked for this game if there were any questions over his fitness to start.

It feels to me that Jones has picked a side to counter Australia, rather than putting our current best/established side out and letting Australia worry about how to counter us.

I have to say Farrell, Manu, Slade is a England’s best available backline. They just have to stop using Manu as a decoy and use him more as a battering ram.
Slade really compliments Farrell as a second distributor and kicker, what I can’t understand is why Lancaster and Jones have picked him more and earlier, he was the stand out centre in the 2015 run up for me. Seems to have taken forever to click with England.

Sad for a Ford though he is an excellent player.

As soon as they stop using Manu as a dummy runner and use him to get over the gain line the back line suddenly gets space. I’m glad we didn’t have to wait for the second half for that.

Edit: What a steal.

Well that exposed Daly’s defensive weaknesses.

I’d love to see a close up replay of the Aussie turn over, looked right dodgy from a distance.

Edit: did the pass for that try look a little “flat”.
