That you can say rainforest and not Amazon is utterly beyond me. We aren't toddlers.

This, saying Rainforest still indirectly mentions the site, how can anyone can take this seriously?, bah

+1 to unban Neil too. Your supposed to improve customer relations not the complete opposite.

The rainforest also sell hardware which happens to be OcUK's primary business. The rainforest also sell bin liners, books, CDs and all manner of completely unrelated stuff but that counts for .... nothing.

It's still so immature though for OCUK to take the stance they do on competitors. It's like you can't take the competition so don't talk about it. I'm not for one minute suggesting we should be able to link to competitor deals directly on computer hardware, but big shops like Amazon/Tesco...are you seriously going to try to enforce people mentioning just the name? Why are we allowed to say rainforest but not Amazon? It still tells someone who you mean. It's just old fashioned and so unrealistic to enforce in day to day life on forums.

What happens when/if another DD has the equivalent of SteamWorks titles for their own DD service?

Said company's mobile DD arm is widely discussed in other forum sections for example.

We've been through this a couple of times that I remember previously with a variety of competitors.

OcUK are picking up the tab for the forums so ultimately it is their call. If you don't like it then exercise your democratic right.

No you can have the games purchaser of OcUK. I have now cleared this matter up. Nothing has changed but no talking of the "new" Digital download service as it relates directly with another company who also sells our main cores to the business.

VALKIA I'll ask you again have you spoken to Michelle about this and if not can I suggest you do this before posting anything else that further erodes the excellent reputation OCuk once held amongst us in these forums.

Just to make it clear, you're not actually aloowed to allude to Amazon by saying "At the rainforest" etc.

Posting links to competitors websites
Posting links to reviews that promote competitors
Quoting the names or contact details of competitors
Offering to provide the names or contact details of competitors
Hinting about product availability at competitors and their pricing
Using the forums to notify a member of intent or actual supply of names or contact details of competitors
Listing competitors names, URL's or e-mail addresses in signatures
Listing competitors names, URL's or e-mail addresses in profile
Posting links to or the mentioning of auction sites
Disguising attempts to do any of the above

That list assumes we understand how OCUK rules define a competitor. That's the whole point. Who are competitors? We need an extensive list of ones we ARE allowed to talk about.

Yeah that rule has been there for ever but I've also seen nearly every mod ignore it, hinting is very rarely actioned on. It's the inconsistency that really harms things, leaves you never knowing where you stand.

I entirely understand the reasoning, search terms for various bits of hardware often turn up on google linking to posts here, and if it has a competitor linked to or mentioned in a post someones found there, then it isn't a good thing.

This has just been handled horribly, doesn't make you feel like a wanted customer really does it? I'm abroad at the moment but I still order the odd thing and when back in the UK I would have continued to. This just makes one have second thoughts.

The real issue here is the way the shop and the forums are regarded as parts of the same entity. As a result, OcUK are trying to be careful not to advertise other companies because they fear they'll lose business otherwise. If the OcUK community was regarded as distinct and seperate to the shop, then there'd be no problems at all, as you'd be able to mention "competitors", although that is a joke as I doubt many people go "Hmm, fancy a new game, better go on OcUK." as OcUK is a fringe/niche market and those games appeal to a fringe/niche of that because most people will still buy from "competitors" as they will have been doing so for years.

The rainforest are simply too huge to ban the mentioning of them. I feel this has all got badly out of hand though on both sides.

Calm down for goodness sake.
