Rumor: Windows 8 to play Xbox 360 games

because its cheaper and does not get virus and go wrong all the time?

My PC never goes wrong, and has never had a virus.

I can have it running 24/7 without a single crash.

Sure it cost a lot, but it also does a lot more stuff and its waaaay higher specced than any console will be for a long long time :)

There is no way Microsoft would do this. If you could play Xbox games on your PC why would you ever ever ever ever ever buy an Xbox?

Now I really dont know if the following is true / false, or was just a rumor, but I remember reading a long time ago that consoles are so underpriced for the cost of the hardware that the console companies actually lose money on each console sold.

However, they make that money, plus more profit back on the price tag of the console games. Based on that, wouldnt fewer Xbox 360 sales, but higher video game sales at console prices for the PC make even more money as it would lower the amount of money lost through console sales?

Even if that is completely untrue, I would still never buy a console because I prefer building / upgrading my PC, and also playing with a mouse + keyboard in most games. So if microsoft did make 360 games compatible with windows, any that I then buy would simply be more money for them.

People who buy consoles will still do so because they are cheaper. Making console games PC compatible would just mean more sales.

Hense the reason my Xbox is on the floor, and my lovely PC is on a stand.

Not sure if anybody else picked up on this yet, but doesn't this sound a lot like it ties in with the rumours for the next generation Xbox console? (other than the article repeatedly specifying the 360 of course...)

From what I've read the next-gen Xbox is supposed to be x86 based and have a software layer that specifies quality settings for games, which potentially could be applied to titles that also run on the PC platform. In that case the next-gen Xbox would be kind of a 'quality assured' gaming PC, where all PC titles for it are automatically tweaked to get the best out of the hardware, and options can then be enabled and disabled as appropriate for differently spec'd PCs.

Its true  & will be called "Xbox Live on Windows"

Wonder what this will mean for future PC games as developers no longer need to make a 360/PC version just a 360 version which will run on Windows 8.......

"Microsoft will be talking developers through how to create Windows 8 games that take advantage of Xbox Live features."

...not XBox games.

This just sounds like rebranding GFWL really.

Its true!

 No it isn't..

This. You already get multi-platform Xbox and GFW titles.

I would assume they're trying to have a poke at the Steam cross-platform in someway as well. Could be interesting.

I don't even see how it's possible. The 360 doesn't even use an x86 CPU. Therefore, games will always need porting. Emulation would be too slow to be usable, I'm fairly certain of that.

All the people screaming " why would microsoft do this, no one would buy an 360 e.t.c. e.t.c" are forgetting one major thing.

Microsoft don't make a huge amount of profit on selling the box itself ( in fact i know at one point they were selling them at a loss/at cost).

All the money is in the games....

I think there is a good chance of this happening but the main questions I'd be asking are; of the current PC game sales, how many of those are made by true PC gamers and how many are made by people who buy a game to play on the family PC? People who would happily turn settings down and only play at 1440x900 anyway. The thing is, I can see devs simply not bothering with the PC version if people can buy the xbox 360 version. The casual PC gamers would probably now choose the xbox360 version anyway.

In terms of console sales, it's actually quite clever. I imagine many people would buy an xbox game to play on the PC, then buy another and another. By the time they had 6-7 games, it would become an 'obvious' decision to buy the console itself. Regardless of what can be done, most normal people have their PC in a bedroom/spare room/study and would never dream of setting it up on the TV in the living room. Buying the console for £150 to play the games they already own on the big TV that they already own would be a good buy for them

Literally Alan Wake would be the sole reason for this :D I wish there would be a pc version. If it was available now I would stump £75 for it!

It's one of my favourite games. The game itself can be had easily for less than a tenner so for your £75, you could probably buy a 2nd hand xbox and the game.

Considering Windows 8 is about 6 months away from launching properly and microsoft are on the verge of annoucing the Xbox revolution (Xbox720 etc) I see no reason why microsoft wouldnt put there Xboc 360 back catalogue playable on Windows 8 as an extra. I doubt 360 sales will be very good once the new console is in production etc.

This isn't going to happen as Microshaft have silently moved ALL GWFL logins to XBox Live.

I cancelled my XBox Live login once I found out.. I have a PC ffs, not an X-Box.

They've silently moved nothing.

Live has always been a single connected system regardless of it being branded as "Xbox" or "GWF". Since the addition of PC games you've always had a login that would work on either PC or Xbox regardless of where you registered it.

They ought to do something like Steamplay if they want to make a bigger impact. Buy a game on PC or Xbox marketplace and you get the other platform's version to download for free. :D

I cant see it, microsoft aggressively combat piracy on the 360 with drive firmware updates, sector changes to disc data and swift widespread console banning, why on earth would they then develop a piece of software for the pc that in no way ties itself to a piece of hardware that can he neutered if you decide not to play by the rules and purchase your games?

we have seen how long software stays secure in the open domain so MS know full well it wouldnt be long before back-up's of games would be bootable within the platform.

Haven't read the thread,

So I can pop a 360 disc into the pc with windows 8 on it and it will play?

Or does it play 360 games as in, download a digital copy?
