Running 20fps on PS2 with a 280x?

PlanetSide 2 is very CPU intensive, in the biggest battles with all settings maxed at 1440p even with a 4770k @ 4.6 and 2 780s I get drops into the low 30s (CPU bound). Incredibly intensive game when there is a huge battle with lots going on.

Seems to be struggling less and less the more I play. Maintained 45fps when there were a few enemy soldiers/flying vehicles on screen. Looks beautiful when there's a night time battle going on.

Think I've yet to see a REAL battle in this game. Jolly can't wait to see how my comp holds up when that happens.

Must look very pretty on that comp of yours.

Yeah, it's going to depend what's going on in the map (Which is why I called Humbug out on his 100 FPS minimum BS).

Like when you said 55 FPS, even that's not truly viable for sustained gameplay over say 10 hours of gameplay. I wouldn't expect 55 sustained from my i7.

I'll most likely turn some settings down in that case. Thought any i7 would run it without a hitch tbh.

Any demos on steam that look good graphically? I'm trying to test the system, kinda hard when there's not too many demos about. Was expecting to find a crysis 3 and company of heroes 2 demo, no such luck. Actually pretty shocked at the lack of pc demos.

Population on PS2 has suffered over the past year, I've been playing it pretty much since launch (around November 2012) and it is clear that the population since then has dropped significantly - they've had to merge a bunch of servers to make up for this. So that's why it might be hard to find a big battle outside of prime-time for the server area.

Which server do you play on? Make sure you are playing on an EU server (Woodman, Miller, Ceres, Cobalt) if you are in Europe as the ping is pretty damn large if you play on a US server (around 200ms) which would definitely contribute to not so smooth gameplay. Unfortunately all the servers seem to have been downgraded since launch so even on EU servers (I play on Woodman) one gets pings of >100ms during prime-time (evening), which is not ideal of course.

But, still, despite the latency issues and the decreasing population, PS2 is still my number one played game as there is nothing else out there that comes close to the scale :)

Playing on Ceres server at the minute. Not sure what the ping is now but it was certainly under 100 when I first selected it. I'm real bad. Going to go ahead and blame it all on my crappy generic mouse and keyboard.

It's a shame so many have left. I bet it was insane in its early days. Still, plenty of people seem to be playing, plus you can just jump right into the action which is a big bonus. No more traversing the map endlessly like on BF when your squad dies.

PS2 is pretty much the only game i play. PS2 loves a fast cpu and Intel trounce amd in this game. Also it favours Nvidia cards as I believe it was developed as an nvidia title with physx which did look very pretty. I'd suggest you have ambient occlusion off, shadows off, flora off etc and monitor your fps. You could also try using the FPS smoothing option. I'm clearing 130fps in a busyish warpgate on hossin playing ultra with a [email protected] and a 780Ti SC. TR Miller FTW (JeffBeefjaw BRTD) ;)

I'm not going to lie, I was terrible at the game when I first started - mostly because I didn't have a clue what was going on, back in those days there were no tutorials or anything when you started your new character, it just dropped you right into the fray :D

It was pretty insane early on, but there is confirmation that the EU servers will be merged soon (into 2 instead of the current 4) so that should hopefully mean that we will see several huge fights again :)

Also, there seem to be a fair few more people playing since a couple of weeks ago when the new in-game continent (Hossin) was launched along with Continent Locking.

The new changes and Hossin have added allot to an already brilliant game. To get the best from it you have to play in an outfit, with comms and command structure. BRTD have done training on a weekly basis for all new recruits since launch (many of us beta tested both ps1 and 2), we find this helps get people up to speed quickly, in what can seem a fairly complicated game and helps with player retention. If you play on Miller add me, JeffBeefjaw and i'll go through some options with you.

Going to try that now. The smoother the better. ;)

I'm just getting creamed by some giant purple dudes with hand cannons for arms. It's fun. I like how the aerial vehicles feel, real weight to them. Anyway thanks, I'm sure I'll get the hang of it eventually. Might be a good idea to try out the tutorial once more me thinks.

Sorry guys, ran into a problem when playing Crysis 2.

Basically every ten minutes I get a black screen with sound. After that I can't do anything. I'm running MSI afterburner and even that disappears ingame when it happens, I have to switch the power off at the back as the power button won't work when it happens.

Seems to just be this game. GPU stays below 75. Was fine for the first level but now it's doing it more frequently.

Any ideas?

Unfortunately travelling back in time is not part of Mantle's feature :D

How I wish all the mmos I played over the years had Mantle...would have had nice smooth 50-60fps+ instead of 20-25fps in intensive battles...

This is not necessarily true at all.

Mantle helps alleviate CPU bottleneck for GPU queued tasks.

MMOs and PS2 are CPU intensive games because...THEY ARE CPU intensive games. Not because the GPU workload is CPU bottlenecked.

Mantle does not make CPU power irrelevant in such titles. If an MMO needs to calculate using the CPU then it will and Mantle will make sod all difference.

I'm not sure why all of a sudden people think Mantle can solve problems that......Mantle cannot solve.

Planetside 2 only uses two cores as far as I can find, so unfortunately you're a bit screwed. The 6300 is lacking in IPC so pretty much all you can do is clock it up as high as it will go and hope for the best.

If PS2 is a game you play frequently, might be worth looking at sending the motherboard and processor back, paying the restocking fee and going for one of those unlocked Pentiums. With any luck the extra cost will be minimal since a G3258 + motherboard retails for slightly less than a 6300 + motherboard, with the G3258 having far superior performance in lightly-threaded tasks.

Not anymore.

PS2 had some large performance patches,as part of a whole number of ones incoming as a PS4 version will be released this year.

Instead of around two threads, now I see all 4 threads on my Core i5 being used now.

I run the game at 1680X1050 on a Xeon E3 1220(Core i5 2400/2500 level) with a GTX660 with mostly high settings. In Hossin seeing early 30s(might be late 20s) during very large battles with at least 100 people,at that point my CPU is almost fully maxed out.

I might need to upgrade my CPU I think at some point.
