hello
new to site

i am considering in running cat5e network around my one bed property and was looking for a bit of advice.

i want to have 3 4 port faceplates in 3 locations

1= hall
2=living room
3=bedroom

reason for this is i have a router with 4 ports so looking to be able to locate this in a cupboard in hall and run this to both locations.

can i run 8 cables of the 4 ports from hall 4 going to bed and for going to livingroom or can i loop it like a mains ring main ??

if i am using port 1 or 2 i will use 3 or 4 in the other room so not running 2 devices of the same port

thanks in advance for any help

Every wall point will need its own dedicated cable running back to your central location (hall cupboard?).

You can easily increase the number of available ports beyond what your router supports by adding a network switch.

thanks for the replies

am i right thinking that the patch panel is just to give the extra ports at the hub/router point (hall point) then 4 wires to each other face plate bedroom/ living room and
the network switch is to increase ports from standard 4 port hub into switch to increase ports to 8 or more so i can feed 4 to both locations??

cheers

Probably. If you could knock up a quick sketch of what you're planning someone will check it for you.

Yes

hi

i can upload any image not sure if because new member

i was thinking connecting 3 face plates up in a line by port 1-1-1 port 2-2-2 port 3-3-3 port 4-4-4

then when i connect router/hub up to port 1 in Hall i could use port 1 in living room (laptop) as long as port 1 not used in bedroom not in use.

does that make sense?

cheers

There's no upload option on the forum. Upload your images to Imgur or similar and then insert the provided IMG link.

If you want to do something like

then it's not a good idea. You might actually get away with it, but quite possibly not.

You want eight ports in the hall connected to four ports in each room.

thank you for taking the time to do that sketch

yes thats what i was thinking of trying to do.

ok so be best to get a 8 port patch panel in hall then 4 to each room, and connect router to whichever ports i want to use or use a network switch to increase ports to eight to make all ports live in both rooms??

thanks

Yes.

If you're only going to have eight ports then you don't really need a patch panel. You can just use faceplates at both ends of the cables.

All a patch panel does is allow you to terminate more cables in a smaller area. You've then got to find something to mount the patch panel to.
