How much slack would you recommend leaving at the patch panel end?

Can I cross electricity cables at all? Seems impossible to me to route the cables without doing so at some point.

Any other tips?

Thanks

Cable is cheap so leave as much slack as possible whilst keeping things tidy.

Try to cross mains cables at right angles, and avoid running them together over long distances. You don’t need massive separation, a couple of inches should be enough. Even if you do need to run them together you’ll normally get away with it.

Always run more cables than you think you'll need (even if you don't terminate them).

Sods law says that the patch panel at the bottom will need to be moved to the top, and then later moved to another cubicle entirely.

You could fire arrows off the cable afterwards :(

Always engineer in enough slack to accommodate the absurd decisions of management, so 2m at a minimum, preferably 99m if possible.

Sorry, should have said...

Converting a outside garage into an living/office space. Installing the network cable before the plasterboard goes up. Running CAT5e into almost every corner of the kitchen/living room/bedrooms for future/other use. It's not currently an office/business scenario, just a learning exercise and future proofing.

It's a small building and could run everything via wireless, but where's the fun in that!

Coaxial has been installed by the electrician, one point to the kitchen and both bedrooms, two to the living room as I haven't decided on the layout yet. Patch panel under the stairs

Can the RJ45 modules be reused or once they're punched down, that's it? Stupidly, I have only ordered the exact amount I need and have never wired one before.

Yes you can, aslong as you don't damage the terminals when punching down wires

If you want to reuse, just remove the wires, strip a new section, punch them down again.

I wouldn't be so sure of that. Enterprise-grade 10 gig kit is still outrageously priced.

The new Intel 10GbE chip is $124 each but for some reason when put them on a card they charge in the UK £500+ :(

But once mother board makers get a hold of them the price will drop a lot, we just got to wait for 10GGbE home switches.

And motherboard makers and most home networking makers won't start producing the stuff for the home environment until there is a sufficient market and need for it. Right now there simply isn't a need for 10 Gb Ethernet.

Wired my first module and it works!

Not happy with the technique though.

Is my cable coming in from the correct direction?
What's the little flappy bit highlighted by my finger?
The spec states "Cable tie base to relieve cable stress". But I cant find any hole where this could be done?

Edit: Do I tie the cable to the flappy bit with the cable tie?
