Hi, part of my training for my football atm is about 5-7 miles running on pavement/roads once a week. Ive always used astroturf football trainers (hard sole) and never had any problems.

But since the start of this season - July-ish - Ive noticed my knee starting to ache, when bending & putting pressure on it (kneeling). The pain seems to appear after my running so im going with the fact that my trainers aren't really suitable.

So.... I want to spend £50ish on some running trainers, that will hopefully stop the pain in my knees after running on hard surface.

Problem - Ive never bought running trainers before so havent got a clue where to start.

Any recommendations?

p.s I need to go any buy them from my local JJB in half an hour before training. :)

Unfortunately I wouldn't recommend buying them from JJB. Do you not have any kind of running specialists anywhere near you?

The best and most comfortable running shoes I've used were Mizunho but they don't have the longevity of the lesser trainers. Puma and Reebok were my joint 2nd favourites.

It depends what suits you really.

I dont know if your specific injuries are common but I can vouch that injuries can be caused by shoes, especially on longer distances.

I have recently had to change from one set of trainers to another because of the cramps i was finding myself getting. I swtiched from something with a soft+comfortable sole to a cross-trainer with a thick but more rigid sole.

Gilly, did you only use 'running shoes' from a running shop, or did you ever use cross trainers?

Yeah I had back injuries caused by Adidas Torsion Bar X-trainers when I was about 15/16. My coach took me to a local specialist and had me measured once the physio had identified the problem. I had size 7.25 feet, but they were narrower than usual and the trainers were making me run on the sides of my feet, carrying the impact up to my spine. They weren't good for me when road running, but I liked cross trainers when I was doing cross country :)

If you are looking at spending serious money on running trainers you really ought to pop down to a specialist in running shoes - they will analyse your running pattern and any problems with ankle or knee bend and will accommodate any orthotics etc given by a physio. They will then give you some models to try and should ask you to go for a run in them on premesis which will allow the assistant to see if the shoes are doing their job correctly.

The likes of JJBare unlikely to offer the same level of service, and you could well end up doing more damage than good.

Oh, and expect to buy a brand you usually wouldn't consider.

I use Asics, really nice decent running shoes. Much better than the likes of the 'fashion shoes' you will get from JJB. Go to a specialist running store though.

Just look in the yellow pages for proper running shops. I think some shops do the adidas foot scan (google it)?

And JJB know as much about running as i do about Rocket Science, youll get some 16 year old dysfunctional kid telling you what to put on your feet.

Just noticed your running on the road in astroturf footy trainers?

Aye, I don't do so much running now but I've had Adidas, Nike, Reebok and Asics and the Asics Gel running trainers are the best I've had by far. Then again I'm heavy footed.

Its really best to go to a proper running shop, different shoes suit different people!
