Ok, the race notes state:

19) Practice starts

19.1 Practice starts may only be carried out on the right-hand side after the pit exit lights and, for the avoidance of doubt, this includes any time the pit exit is open for the race. Drivers must leave adequate room on their left for another driver to pass.

19.2 For reasons of safety and sporting equity, cars may not stop in the fast lane at any time the pit exit is open without a justifiable reason (a practice start is not considered a justifiable reason).

So, beyond the light ok, in the fast lane, not ok... So then, obvious question, where does the slow and and fast lane merge?
 
Did anyone watch The Last Dance. Think today proves to me that Hamilton has that same quality of me v the world that Jordan had.

I wouldn't be surprised for a pole and win in Germany.
 
Interesting thought... Even if Hamilton gets no more points, only 2 come off in November this year, the remaining 8 hang around until at least July next year.

So, at the penultimate race, if Hamilton has already secured the championship. Hamilton deliberately gets a ban. Shouldn't be too difficult given how eager they've been for dishing out points so far this year.

Banned from the last race of the year and his points total is reset to 0 for 2021...

Too risky. If he got it wrong they’d say he threw the sport into disrepute and could DQ him from the championship.

Yup, this. Bottas comment at the end of the race was even more amusing when you consider how Hamilton destroyed him in quali. Hamilton doesn’t need to take risks, but he’s always pushing the boundaries in every aspect and that’s what wins him the championship. So bottas probably has no points on his licence - because he’s never pushing while Hamilton looks for every angle.
 
Has anyone had any penalties before for a practice start in the wrong position, I’m sure I remember it previously but can’t find where at all

No, Leclerc did something similar apparently years ago and it was investigated after the race and dismissed according to the Sky team. No idea if it was exactly the same or whether it even happened. Even Max has come out and said those two penalty points are harsh.

Mercedes need to stop dropping the ball like this though. Red bull have been nearly perfect with their recent strategies. Mercedes are lucky it isn’t close.

The Stewards reviewed video evidence.

The driver performed the practice start near the end, but directly in the pit exit. Art 36.1 requires drivers to use constant throttle and constant speed in the pit exit other than in the place designated for practice starts in the Event Notes item 19.1., which is defined as the place ”on the right hand side” after the pit exit lights (and is not part of the track as defined by lines) which has been known to all competitors and used without exception.

So, was still in the pit lane.
Requires the drivers to use constant throttle and constant speed. Riiiight... I think that accelerating out of the speed limited section of the pit lane breaks that rule... and they all do that.
Right hand side after the lights. Well, check.
Not on the track. Check again.

Still not seeing any real reasoning for the penalty.

I can see this happening, but first he needs to stop making silly mistakes. It was his own fault, why did he need to go that far down the pits to practice start.
He is far too close now to a ban, he can't make any risky decisions or overtakes being on 10 points.
