Russians get a bit nosey..

Nuclear weapons don't just "go off". The worst they would do is give someone a serious headache if it fell out of the plane and hit them on the head... (unless of course they are armed and triggered by outside sources...)

Can you answer this question?

What makes a nuclear weapon safe/unsafe? If a plane were to crash into my local supermarket, whats to stop it making a huge mushroom cloud and destroying half the country?

A nuclear bomb doesn't work by simply dropping it. For an explosion to occur there need to be a series of nuclear reactions within the device. Read here

yeah putin is dangerous , but bush and his fellas the british are safe.

Bush has to step down pretty soon as he can only serve 2 terms.

Putin will stay as long as the Russian people want him, and there's no doubting he has won their hearts. He is also comparatively young. Both these reasons come together to mean that he has the potential to be in power a long time, which means he has the opportunity to put a long term plan in to action. Going by his recent actions his plans seem to be appearing to be more about the rebuilding of Russia, and this looks set to continue.

He is a black belt, a former KGB agent and also loves to dress in military uniform, often while on leisure.

He is not your ordinary short term leader like Bush is. :)

the guy is watching nato getting closer and closer. all i see is justified moves from the russian side , they feel threatened so they have to do something. And surprisingly they do , we thought russia is like dead but hell no .

Bush is a short term president but US policy isnt , and imho the presidents cannot do what they like.

so what if he is a former KGB man and has a black belt , bush -father and son- were jet pilots. clinton was a good runner , i dont see anything wrong here

I agree with that, totally justified and I have no doubts about Russia's potential.

It's the mentality of it, I didn't say there was anything wrong with it!

It's been sparked by both sides, a less nationalist Russian leader may have approached things differently whereas a more rational US leader may have not gone to war in the middle east in the first place.

Both are to blame in their individual ways, however you have to be suspicious about a country claiming the arctic circle.

Personally I love the Russian culture and mentality that goes with it. I think Putin is a very clever and great leader. That doesn't stop him being dangerous however.

i think the radar sites sparked all this , not the ME wars.
What amazes me is the polish czech etc policy , these guys dont read history at all. they are in the middle squeezed by superpowers , paid the price lots of times and still making the same mistakes.

Putin can not rerun for election in 2008 according to the current Russian Constitution.

Whens that got in his way :p

In my view its a normal thing for russia to be doing this sabre rattling. They need a pick me up after the 90s boom and bust. They need to feel proud and strong with this being an easy way to do it. The defence budget is still pretty low, so it will be some time before we need worry about russia.

China though is the interesting one..... Everyone is now starting to see the pacific as the future hotspot and its getting hotter each month. An arms race there is going to be spectacular when you consider the three biggest economies are in the the pacific region. We in Europe can sit back a little i hope...

tbh the USA and UK need to worry about these power hungry Leaders, wouldn't surprise me that one of them wants to go down in history for firing a nuclear weapon, do they need to be so offensive.

HHmm, yet its the US and UK that are invading other countries (well, for the last two decades anyway), and history shows that only a US president that has dropped a Nuclear weapon.

Maybe the Russians are asking the same questions as you?

at least the RAF will be pleased..it will give them something to do

radar operators have something to look for and pilots really scramble their aircraft....better than just training to do it..they will be sending Putin a christmas card this year

Yes, but he can choose a successor, back them entirely then return 4 years later ;)

Chechnya, Afghanistan... The Russians are certainly no angels themselves.

Buoyed by recent economic recovery and an relative end to the political and social anarchy of the 1990s, many people think Russia is seeking to regain its status as a preeminent world superpower. For the Russian people, it’s simply a matter of national pride and they will always likely respond positively to a strong, militant leader who would dare to provoke the west in the face of adversity. Putin has certainly demonstrated his willingness to fulfil this role; therefore I’ll certainly not be surprised to see him continue his tenure after his constitutional ‘reign’ has ended.

As for the Russian military; restructuring and real increases in budgets have continued unabated for years now, and their recent joint exercise with the Chinese has proved their (albeit limited) ability to project their power. Couple this with very sophisticated arms industry (new Russian jets in the hands of the Indians pretty much humiliated our archaic Tornado ADVs recently) and it almost gives credence to the idea of a second cold war.

The photos - they may be overbudget and late, but those Typhoons are awesome.
