RV770 expected to release in May?

Excellent still bugged no 4870X2 at launch but it would appear that the 4870XT maybe more then enough, and another one for a quick 4870X2 subsitute :)

According to the specs 1 x 4870 has ~the same raw gflops processing power as a 3870x2 so 1 should be enough until you can add a 4870x2 :)

I'm hoping it is at least the same speed as an X2, as I'll be replacing my current X2 with one, and putting my X2 with a media PC.

"The 4850 in fact is in a 110 watt power envelope (the 4850 256MB GDDR3 is a sub-100 watt card). There is, by the way, a big difference in power consumption between GDDR3 and GDDR5 versions. 512MB GDDR5 memory will consume 34.5% less power than a model with 512MB of GDDR3 memory."

Does that mean the HD4850 w. GDDR5 will have a (110*0.655)W envelope? If so, that's amazing.

Would've thought that the core would be drawing most of the power, though.

Thats what i thought. I think it might mean purely in terms of the power consumption of the memory. So ~65% of what the gddr3 memory consumes by itself. Makes more sense.

i want to see nVidia on their knees :p

Same here tbh, Atleast ATI/amd are making an attempt to make their cards consume less power, nvidia don't seem to care less - Im mostly interested in seeing what the cooler looks like on ati/amd's new cards and indeed the size of the card itself!

I think they have to have at least a 80% increase in performance over the HD3870 XT, in order to safely topple the Geforce 9 series, let alone nvidias upcoming next gen cards. Most of all though, they have to make performance much more consistent this time, unlike the HD2000/3000 series which in many cases, hardly beat the X1950 cards.

Some, with emphasis on some, and also did, as of now, we know it's not the case, they've had more than enough experience with the way their R600 tech works, I think it can only get better with the extra SPs and so on. I myself can see something like an 80% increase on them, like a 4870 around the same speed, or a bit faster than a 3870X2.

Yep I personally think the 4870xt will perform on par with a 3870x2 which tbh if its rumoured pricing is true would be a steal.

Yeah, many is a bit harsh, it only occured in some of the benchmarks. It's still true though, even today, that the performance of the R600 architecture is inconsistent compared the Geforce 8/9 series.

But...

Will this be the card that cracks Crysis?

no. :p

Stuff crysis, i bet even S.T.A.L.K.E.R clear sky will run better on current hardware and apparently looks almost or about as good. But im hearing 4870 is midrange? i could have sworn i read that on another site but it smells like bs to me.

all that speed and no aa as ati suck at sorting softeware out and there hardware for games

I would have thought that while Nvidia's hardware was faster, ATI's software support looks better e.g. my "latest" Nvidia whql drivers are dated last year!

It's great to sit and speculate but getting real world performance results is what we all really want, we can sit and speculate about numbers, bandwidth, TMU and the rest, but without knowing how the architecture works in conjunction with these figures, it is just that... speculation. Let's just say that the real proof will be in the pudding! If ATI doesn’t prevail you can be sure NV will hit us with a killer card to counter ATI’s moves (until the next time that is), all in all let’s look forward to new hardware and another epic battle for the graphics crown!

VR-Zone have an updated schedule of when Nvidia plans to release its next-gen cards (GT200). They put that date as July - I always thought we wouldn't see them before September. Maybe ATi's RV770 has made them accelerate the launch...
