RV870 to have 384bit memory interface rumour

Hmm

how much was the 4870 on release?

Looks like it will be close to £400 if anyone wanted 2 5870's, and if they did hike the price i think they are going to lose quite a bit of cash once nVidia release their parts, that is if they are better.

Going to wait for early game benchmarks before deciding if i should upgrade myself.

It would make scene, 256 BIT seemed a little dated.

I am sure the new ATI card will be good value. 384 BIT would make for a reasonable priced PCB and GDDR5 is very cheap. The only price spanner I can see is if TSMC cant supply the wafers.

If this is true then yum! Sadly I don't think the price of the 5870 will be as low as the 4870 with no Nvidia competition.

Except evidence and history proves otherwise, Nvidia had the 260/280 at roughly £300/£400 on release? ATi came out with cards, that actually competed they COULD have simply released the 4870 at £350 and the 4850 at £200 and no one would have batted an eyelid based on the fact that the 4870 was faster than the 260 and so could be priced higher.

Yet ATi, knowing exactly where they COULD price their products launched them at roughly £180/£130 price points severly undercutting Nvidia with no competition.

They could bring out the 5870 at £300, and sell 500k of them making £100 profit per card thats £5million total profit.

Or they can sell it at £180 and only make £50 profit, but sell 10million of them, thats £500,000,000.

Remember if they increase the price from £180 to £300 the don't make an extra £120 profit, they get the same percentage, their price goes up but the card makers make a chunk of that extra profit for themselves.

Price lower, sell 100 times as many, have 100 times as many produced in total cheaper to make as they can get better deals with the manufacturers.

Theres no reason for ATi to go expensive, nor will they increase profits by doing so, they'll DECREASE profits by doing so.

i would like to make a guess that the release price will be about £280 to us here in the uk, i have said this for ages now, i bet i am not far off

I think the higher end pre-overclocked models might be £250 on release but that'll just be vendor price gouging...

Hi Drunken, I agree kind of. Months after the 4870 launched I read reports of a number of analysts, and ATI themselves, saying that the 4870 should and could have been priced higher.

Don't get me wrong, I hope the 5870 is below £200 like the 4870, but sadly I don't think that will be the case.

I think the 4870 512mb was £187 on release. The 1gb version didn't arrive untill a while later.

I thought NVIDIA were starting to use 512bit memory interfaces?

EDIT: Yeah the NVIDIA cards already have a 512bit interface... why the 'yum' factor when technically it's out of date? lol

They use slower GDDR3 as opposed to ATI's GDDR5. Essentially 256bit GDDR5 is equal to 512bit GDDR3 (I think), whereas 384bit GDDR5 would be faster than both. In theory.

Phenom 2 965BE, new Cats, some new G chipset, a stage setup and two of the best overclockers in the world to show off the new core and rumors of a new 5000 series gpu.

Im sure we will be hearing a lot over the next few days.]

Sounds interesting. This is at Quakecon btw.

ahhhh, thanks for the heads up :)

But the new NVIDIA cards are supposedly using GDDR5... can't remember what memory bus they are using though.

They are planning on going with a huge bus and GDDR5. hold on I have the predicted spec's somewhere.

Cant find them, its in the gt 300 thread.

ATI cards are due in September though, Nvidia cards probably won't come out till about 6 months later if not longer.

Then again NVIDIA are hoping to stick to the November release. I doubt it will be 6 months later, maybe 2-3, who knows.

Considering what's wrote here I'd be very surprised by a November release since it only recently just taped out and it will probably need a respin or two which is will delay things further. Where's reviewers already have the 5870 hardware.

It also looks like the GT300 will cost a hell of a lot more to make than the 5870

Yeah I know, I have seen those reports, however there was a newer report in July that quoted that NVIDIA were in fact back on schedule and were hoping to make a November-December release.

But I can't be bothered to find the link now haha

Considering they can't even get GT215 out on time which is a hell of a lot smaller than GT300, like I said I'll be really surprised if GT300 is out this year. ATI is likely to have a huge head start this time.
