Rx480 prices.... mining?

It seems like the GPU buzz is spreading, or at least there are a few people on ebay trying to charge £1100+ for a 1080ti .... shame they are not great for mining.

It's funny, HDD/RAM prices are still artificially high due to price gauging following the shortages a few years ago but tech sites don't care, yet all of a sudden GPU demand/availability is problematic because more people are using computers for actual compute work and it's big news XD

Actual compute work?? Don't make me laugh. Mining is no more than stress testing like prime 95. No real work is being done. Nothing is being developed or produced. It's just a huge waste of energy.

Actual compute work??
Yeah, the stuff computers were originally developed for. Things like folding, video editing, CAD, compiling, 3D modelling, etc have always been a thing it's just one type of compute work is more popular than normal ATM.

Prime 95 isn't a stress test, it's a real world compute application, it just gets used by some overclockers to test their system because of the load it creates.

Lol, it's one of the biggest things in computing in decades, it's changing the world, you can't exactly say that about Mass Effect Andromeda XD

Ok we clearly have a differing opinions of what "compute means". I mean compute for a purpose. Not just crunching random numbers for absolutely no gain.
Totally irresponsible use of energy if you ask me. It's up there with rolling coal "for a laugh".

But as beany_bot said its nothing important being done. It's not helping cure terminal and life debilitating diseases or helping to predict climate change or some useful calculations like that. If if were at least, all that energy would be put to good use as some benefit to society.

Gtx 1080tis are actually about the most reasonably priced cards right now. Can't believe I'm saying that lol.

True, been seeing them for sub £600 brand new online. Was even tempted by one for a split second today, but then I snapped out of it remembering Vega is due soon.

Even if Vega disappoints there is nothing coming out this year that is a must play on the PC for me, so happy to wait for Volta and get a 1170/2070 which will likely be similar performance to a 1080Ti for 50% less money, not to mention it will run with a lot less power and be cooler and less audible as a result. Plus it is nice when you get a new architecture card, will stay fresh and new for a while :D

Not really the case, bitcoin serves a purpose. In some parts of the world it means the difference between life and death. We are lucky enough not to require it and can condemn it. ETH is slightly different, but theres a purpose. The industrial revolution at start was very inefficient, I'd hope it is tending towards better things

I ordered a 1080ti Strix this morning then had a realisation it was crazy to do so right now so cancelled order.

Gonna just wait until 4k is constant 60fps for anything.

Just caught up on all this. My £125 Asus 480x seems to be going for £250+ on ebay at the moment. Mental. So tempted to flog it and go back to my trusty 7950 for a while. Not like I'm even gaming on my PC at the mo.

I'm in a situation where I need a gpu for my 2500k build. I sold my 980 a while back and now need to fill that gap.

It's annoying.

You will probably need to wait for the Volta GTX 1180/2080 or the Ti much later for that. For me 1080Ti performance I would be very happy with as I have no problems turning settings down and adjusting things to my taste. Usually I find one can gain a lot of fps for very little to no loss of IQ by tinkering with settings. The difference can easily be between say an 1080 and 1080Ti by doing so, so why pay extra I figure :)

That being said, it all depends on future games, if they end up being very GPU intensive, I may need the extra performance anyways. But for everything out today that I would play, 1080Ti performance would get 60fps easily.

Well currently I have a 1080 watercooled and it is performing great at 1440p. There is room for improvement but if I'm honest I only really seem to play Dota 2 and occasional battlegrounds and I have no issues with those.

If we were getting big exclusives like the PlayStation does I'd be more inclined to splash out.

Haha. Dota 2 does not take much to run. I did it 120fps back when I had my 1070 and it run easily at 4K maxed out :)

Great game, but it is too addictive and rage inducing for my taste, so I quit it. I do return now and then when there is a new hero though for a few matches :P
