Can someone spec me a ryzen build for gaming and longevity?

I'm going to keep my 1 tb ssd, psu and gtx 970

I need cpu, mainboard, ram, cooler and a case

That's a nice budget so you have room for choice.

Midi is probably best, although could do full tower of that's is an awesome case, boat seems pointless I'd I don't have two graphics cards.

Water is OK if it's a kit

Faster.

3.0/3.7GHz VS 3.4/3.8GHZ

Think I would actually take a 1600X over a 1700 the more I look at it (6cores and fast)

Could the 1700 be over clocked or is it hit and miss?

It can, but its as you say hit and miss like all overclocking (except Intel Sandybridge from a few years ago, they all do 4.5Ghz atleast)

Well I did see this a week ago - http://www.gamersnexus.net/guides/2867-intel-i7-2600k-2017-benchmark-vs-7700k-1700-more/page-3

SO in a number of situations the 4.5GHz 2500K they have in those charts still cant keep up with Ryzen 7 at stock.
