2. Any explaination as to why search function causing so much trouble.

I'm not sure how the function works, but I imagine it creates a whole new query each time which is a lot more intensive than just showing sections.

Cheers Pal,

Really bugs me that I always have to find out "why, why, why", know what I mean. Keep us updated or if you can give a more detailed explaination let us all know.

Thank You

Pretty much, there are many large sites that actually have to use two servers to host their forums and provide search functionality as searching is very resource intensive.

Displaying sections is easy, it's all done on ID numbers which are unique and make it easy and relatively resource free to order them that way. Search requires the server to go through every post and check the data against the search string, making a list of them to display. That's a lot more data access and cpu intensive.

Personally I don't really miss search when it's not there, I don't use it that much anyway. I'd much rather have good response on the rest of the forum.

Don't suppose anyone's subscribed to and thus knows the link to the old 'which uni are you going to' thread? Want to see if anyone's going to Queen Mary's.

I too just use the new posts button rather than reading individual forums. OcUK = n00b without 'new posts' button tbh

Do you remember the member that posted it? I'll try to find it for you.

Bah, searched 20 pages back and can't find it. Sorry :(

no idea unfortunately - it was ages ago so may have been nuked. If you can't find it (thanks for looking) I'll just start a new thread when all the A-level people get their results (so everyone definitely knows if they're going or not)

Sorry completely off-topic, but i've no idea who the mods are, or how to contact them!?! :o

Could a passing mod please move a thread for me? I thought i'd posted link in the software forum, but somehow i posted it in the general discussion forum!?!?!

I figure at least on of you guys is a mod lol! :D
