Does anyone else find it strange that a Tech Advice site takes almost a week to sort there Forum out
Hardly a good advert for the knowledge base here is it.

It is a very complicated problem you know!

I was thinking the very same thing this morning. As difficult as the issue may be having an operable search engine is a fairly integral part of a useful forum. This shouldn't be something that takes so long to fix - it should be someones priority.

I wish people would stop doubting the way this forum is run. Yes, search is basically an essential tool, but if you have any idea on how complicated this certain issue is, you wouldn't be complaining! ;)

If I was them I would actually be at the stage of thinking about creating a separate server for searching and somehow linking the SQL tables of each server.

Some mind-boggling ideas to look at and they have to select the best one. Give it time.

.

 I do not doubt the way the forum is run at all.
It is true that i have no idea what the problem is or how complicated it may be to fix. What is also true is that i praise Oc whenever i feel some is due which i feel entitles me to have the odd whinge when i feel that is due to.
My earlier comments relate to one thing & one thing only. I big up Oc as home of the Tech head, the overclockers paradise amongst the ton of BS/crap advice given elsewhere. It just doesn't look good when we cannot fix our own forum.

We can fix it, in fact there are a number of possible fixes.

The problem is they all have their downsides and potential problems, so it's a case of looking into them fully before touching anything.

This is beyond a joke.

Since you guys are a relatively small volume site and are using the kiddies database (MySQL I presume).

Drop me an MSN and I'll set up a cluster of read only caching Slaves fed by a couple of masters... Since we do need SEARCH I even propose to do it for you for free.

You can MSN me anytime.

Cheers

Thanks for the offer but just the money to pay for them will do.

Yeh sorry I was being a bit crap there.

Well my current mission is just as bad... Fat mysql and apache instances on a low spec machine with mega hits. If the load average stays under 10 we are sweet

lighttpd and xcache would free up some resources on the front end, mysql is as much about what your software is doing as the hardware though :(

Its a balancing act - open the floodgates at the front and the backend falls off the chart.

The Sys Admins dummies handbook just throws more hardware at the problem

Oh well good luck.

There was talk of paid accounts and having access to it, but it never happened, I was disappointed.

I've heard on the grapevine that this forum currently has a £25,000 pa hosting contract. Please tell me this is wrong.

Lots more :p

Why sound surprised, it's not like the forums or the shop could run on a VPS, most dedicated servers couldn't. I don't think many hosting providers even list prices for servers of at this end of the market (it's always 'call for a quote').

Don't even ask what the bandwidth bill is like

You can always spend more of course.
