S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl only £3.50 on STEAM!

A little off topic but if i purchase this from steam is it just a matter of downloading and installing and that's it ? or is some kind of steam bloat installed all so.

Thx jay.

If there was a mod to remove all radiation bubbles or somit i might have another go at this. I sold my other copy so steam deal would be ok, if its modable and if theres a no radiation mod and maybe a mod for realisitic sky and other things mods.

Thats a steal for anyone whos not played it. Def one of the best games of the last few years.

I'm very tempted to get this. Can anyone confirm if mods will work with the steam version? And also, if they do, what mods would those who have played it recommend? I heard there were some nice graphics mods around.

I tried the realism mod and it didn't work. Might just have been me, I dunno. It needs modding though because out of the box it has issues - such as your view bobs around loads when you walk which makes you sea sick, and your POV is very low, as if the camera is on your knees rather than at your eye level.

Loved this game! May not be everyone's cup of tea, but for £3.50 it's worth a punt!

It does need some time to get into. Also, fairly realistic (I think) weapons so you have to choose your shot and don't expect much from the rubbish ones you get at the start.

the buggyness etc is was destroys this, AND the 1 hour 5 min autosave which is quite frankly stupid but eh im an autosaver, v good price btw blimey

+1
Most games have their ups and downs but I found stalker just kept on gradually drawing me further in. Such great atmosphere, 'The Zone' and all its inhabitants don't joke around, this added and heightened the tension even more too.

I think part of the problem is that too many people seem to try it for an hour and just give up because it's so hard in the early stages.

It sounds like this is because they try to play it like a normal shooter, whereas particularly at the start of the game when your equipment is crap it's much more of a survival horror game.

You can't just see a load of dudes in the distance and think 'right, i'm just going to charge in and waste those guys'. Generally you will be slaughtered in the first few hours of the game.

Part of the enjoyment for me though is that later on you come back to these areas when your equipment rocks and get to go to town on folk! :)

I couldn't get in to STALKER. Rubbish character interaction and buggy as hell. I loaded in to the Pripyat area, ran forward a bit then suddenly warped to the other side of it.

Decent enough story but you have to read it all in your journal which killed the immersion for me.

But.. if the bugs and such are fixed I'll give it another crack at £3.50. Can't go wrong at that price.

love Stalker and recently reinstalled to try out the Oblivion Lost mod and threw in traders repair weapons & armour to make it a little more like Clear Sky.

ran fine from first time I tried it however recently I get a crash to desktop quite a lot when trying to close down the brain by Yantar lab :(.

might have to go back to an earlier save and try it again from scratch.
knocking off all the enemies before going into the lab might have caused a problem or two.

wish there were more games like Stalker.

I've only just played a few hours on this and can already see what people mean by it growing on you. It starts of really slow, and on the point of being stupidly unfair and hard. I pretty much got gibbed on the first mission 3 or 4 times.

Somebody then suggested that I should "try" and hit the camp of militia south of the start point. I did, took a good hour, plenty of line of sight and tree abuse, and a handfull of cheesy save/load clicks, but come out with a much better weapon so the next bits of the game were made them more bearable.

The interface is a little dated, but I'm sure I have heard stories of many mods being successfully added to the steam client.

I have this bookmarked but not actually tried to install it yet:

There was a thread on this forum about this patch/mod collection somewhere.

One of the other things I like about it is that it rewards the carefully thinking player or tactician. You're so vulnerable within the game at times, unlike with some other simplier FPS titles. This adds so much to the tension that in the early hours I can hear a pin drop...then my heart skips a beat when something out of the blue happens.
I think it was in developement for at least five years, great...seriously great game.:)

Yeah, absolutely.

Coming back to the game a second time, when you are really familiar with it, you realise that with a bit of tactics you can take out difficult areas like the Army base at Cordon even in the very early stages of the game if you plan it right.

The reason I gave up is it just lacked direction far too much for me. Just kept getting lost at what I was supposed to do and ended up wandering round not really doing anything. Not a open ended game person really..

Could see massive potencial though if that's your thing, the graphics are still pretty nice and there are some really scary parts too.

First Tactic I tried was leading the dude from the army down the road to the stalker camp. I let them fight it out and them cleaned out any survivors. Loads of weapons lying around after that ;)
