S2000 gearbox replacement

I think you're right, its not so easy to kill a gearbox. Still, its not so great knowing your gearbox is terminally ill.

When the poor old S2K needs a new clutch i shall have a used gearbox popped in at the same time. Until then I will have to drive with the windows down or hood down at all times whilst ensuring I fully deploy my right foot to drown any poorly gearbox noise with induction noise!

No point getting a used gearbox that could be just as bad. May as well get your current one rebuilt.

That is probably the safest option. The issue is the cost of gearbox refurbishment vs the ~£350 cost of a used one. I believe the components on these are pretty expensive plus the labour involved. You also need to find a place to happy to have the car in pieces for the several weeks + that getting the box rebuilt takes.

If your car drives and you can select gears, then there is very little wrong with your gearbox. I'm uncertain why you are so dead set on changing your gearbox or taking drastic action to remedy something which doesn't sound like a problem.

You misshifted, it doesn't sound like anything more than that. Stop worrying and enjoy your car.

You can expect a certain amount of noise on the older ones at that mileage, just like with older mx5's. Put a video up if you can.

Is the S2000 known for lunching it's gearbox ? I don't know owt about S2000s' but I'd be shocked if you ****** up a gearbox just by crunching a gear or two.
Sounds like you need a Decent 2nd opinion.

My brother went through 2 gearboxes with his. we ended out getting the original one rebuilt and fitted that back in after the last one went. at least that way he had a warranty

Where are you pulling several weeks from?

When we had the Evo 8 done it was gone a week

Ive had a few gearboxes rebuilt and its normally 7 days turn around at most.
this will also give you peice of mind that the box is a good one.
the places I have dealt with normally only replace the parts that they deem to be worn they will check the other parts and if there happy with them they will reuse them.

the last time I got a gearbox rebuilt the company done it for £375 cash and gave me a 12 month 30k warranty with it. I dropped the gearbox out my self and delivered it to them on the Monday I had it back with me on the Friday.

and as said previously its rwd the gearbox will be straight forward to remove.

For now the gearbox seems OK. It whines a fair bit but cannot be heard with the windows open.

Eventually when the clutch needs replacing I will look into getting the gearbox rebuilt at the same time.

Why? If the car is running properly then the gearbox isn't damaged. It's either working or it isn't.

What you are suggesting is the equivalent of doing an angine rebuild because you need an oil change.

You couldn't be skirting around the subject more. Does the car run and drive OK? If it does then there isnt going to be a problem with the gearbox.

The car runs and drives well apart from 5th not engaging as easily as the other gears, and the sound.

Had you been in the car at the moment of the incident and heard the 'bits braking and possibly bits falling off' sound, you might see where I'm coming from.

Whilst it is fine for the moment, it may well get worse. Given that swapping the box and changing the clutch can be done at the same time, and, given the cost to do so, to better prolong the life of the car I think it's wise to spend an extra £300 on top.

I'm not definitely decided on this, but will strongly consider. The clutch may go on for the next 50k miles, so it might not be necessary during my ownership
