Safely Removing USB Memory Sticks

Why do people store their entire life on flash memory these days?!

...there's this new technology called "floppy disks".

I actually acquired a USB floppy drive a few days back and had a swell of 'legacy', fired up a few discs just to hear it run.

Realised pretty quick that virtually every file format I use wouldn't fit on one - but hey, nice to look at :D

I just yank mine out, and hate my Mac friends for being anal about dragging their devices into the trash to remove them (it's not even logical!?) - and at the OSX error message they get if they don't.

I always use it.
I had a bit of coursework corrupted a couple of years ago and I had to do it again :(
so you save it on the USB but don't keep a copy on your HD? or you actually work on the USB version.

I don't know how to safely remove the drive?

I've just pulled out, even when windows are open, never had a corruption once. In all the four years of using USB memory.

I have a mate who works in ICT in Newcastle college and I asked him what the most IT common problem was.
He said "Students removing their USB sticks incorrectly and losing their data".
I still remove all my stuff incorrectly though except my IPOD.

Tell him to stop being a retarded IT support guy and disable delayed writes then.

I always just pull it out, never had a problem, i usually email myself all my important courseworks to print at uni, but if i did have something important on pen drive i might click safely remove but otherwise just pull it out.

You just don't want to pull it out when you have all your precious documents saved on it

Force of habit means I near enough always use the safley remove option, been using usb drives far too long and seen far to many corupted etc especially back in the 98/me days.

+1

Sometimes though Windows give a message it can't stop the USB stick now and that is the cue to jank it out of the USB connector :)

no, thats the cue to close OPEN DOCUMENTS and folders and try again, or you WILL get corrupted files!

It's basically to stop retards pulling the stick out while data transfer is in process i would have thought, i've never bothered with it.
If it aint being accessed, my datas going to be fine.

Does the same apply for SD cards? There's no flashy light on them.

And I assume you don't need to 'Safely Remove Hardware' with Joysticks etc...?

I've always just loaded and pulled quickly... ;)

Nah, generally I havent even thought about it. When I've transfered a file on the screen I just pull out the stick and I've never had a problem.
