Safest Browser?

To be fair it's not a case of being an "Anti Google type". Pretty much Googles sole source of income is based around your data and advertising and they're worth a few quid so clearly advertisers feel they are giving them something over bog standard scattergun approach generic advertising. They didn't become a multi gabillion dollar global company by accident.

Some may not mind targeted advertising, or in fact prefer it, lets face it, if I'm going to have advertising pointed at me it may as well be relevant.

On the flip side I tend to take the view that once any of your information, preferences, history, purchases or indeed anything else personal is on the internet/on a Google/anyone else database it's never going to go and is no longer mine.

It's relatively benign, and why would Google or anyone else be interested in me, still, in particular with an eye to the future I'd prefer to keep as much of my personal information to me unless it's for a good reason. At the moment, in effect selling my personal information in exchange for the use of chrome isn't a good enough reason whilst there are good alternatives.

Ie is probably the least safe browser with regards to actual security. It's not bad at picking up fishing sites ect though. Use sandboxie and no script plugin for maximum security.

I second this, IE is not great, same for most other Microsoft programs, there is always a 3rd party program which can do it better o.O

Modern versions of IE are absolutely fine and comparable to other browsers. If you have evidence to the contrary, then please share.

Why is it only IE that is opening multiple tabs without me doing anything? I dont visit and 'dodgy' websites and AV and Malware checked and all ok

The not visiting "dodgy" websites thing is one of the biggest security fallacies. Yes, by not visiting the darker sides of the web you're significantly reducing your risk, but it's not 100%. I've seen Facebook and even Ars Technica push out malware in the last 12 months.

If IE is spawning tabs on its own thats something that needs looking into. Have you done any kind of offline malware scan?

Haven't used IE for ages, but had a look recently and it's not bad. AFter years of Firefox, other browsers just feel too "locked down" in terms of customisation.

All else being equal the most popular browser will attract the most attention from those trying to circumvent security.

I thought Opera was (a couple of years back) supposed to be the most secure "out of the box" - this may have changed.

It's been IE for the past 2 versions, Ms really pulled their finger out with that, but left in the small niggles like some system settings still having to be changed through the IE settings panel. Shame, does so well with html5 too. The fact that Chrome make's it's self a challenge for cracking is it's weakness, despite the auto flash updating (which fixes so many problems) however the last release of flash added auto updating to the program itself so that not really a big deal anymore.

The real problem with this thread i the ops poor English. If he'd asked for the most secure browser there would have been an informative discussion. Instead it seems somewhat disjointed, a mix of people wondering what exactly he meant and those pointing out the driver is always the weakest link.

No browser is full proof. If you go looking for sites that exploit the latest weaknesses - you will suffer.

Yea!! :D

The competition is still lagging behind Chrome in terms of Java & general plug-in security.

Out of all the negative IE comments in this thread, I've yet to see anybody attempt to explain exactly *why* they think it's the worst.

Opinions based on a version released 10 years ago, throw in a bit of sheep mentality and hey presto :p

IE9 is an accomplished browser, if only it had better plugin support!

Out of interest, when people say Internet Explorer is insecure, do they mean from a technical perspective? From my understanding, Internet Explorer 9 seems quite a secure web browser, considering it's security features.

  • Address Space Layout Randomization
  • Data Execution Prevention
  • Protected Mode
  • Safe Structured Exception Handling (SafeSEH) / Structured Exception Handler Overwrite Protection (SEHOP)
  • SmartScreen Filter
There is a little information here on a few of the above mentioned features.

Using Internet Explorer 9 in conjunction with running as a standard user along with having a little education, leaves you in quite a good position I think.

While certain web browsers may be securer on a technical level than others, I think they all provide adequate protection. Further enhancements in this area will obviously always be welcome though.

I would say from a vulnerability reposnse time IE is poor.

Or at least has been in the past.

Also being a Microsoft developed program, its more targeted by vulnerabilities than the other browsers.
