Sky Sports are running a feature on what would be the best Manchester United starting XI under Sir Alex in his 25 years.

http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11979/7288593/Fergie-s-finest-XI

Figured it would be good to make a thread and see who people would choose.

Mine:

GK: Schmeichel
DL: Evra
DC: Rio
DC: Vidic
DR: G. Neville
ML: Giggs
MC: Keane
MC: Scholes
MR: Ronaldo
ST: Cantona
ST: Rooney

Just because a few missed out, here's the bench :D

Van Der Sar
Stam
Beckham
Robson
Van Nistelrooy

Schmeichel
Irwin
Vidic
Stam
Neville
Giggs
Keane
Scholes
Beckham
Ronaldo
Cantona

Yeah I'm treating Ronaldo as a forward because I couldn't leave Becks out :p

Cool thread

GK: VDS - controversial :p

RB: Neville
CB: Ferdinand
CB: Vidic
LB: Evra

RM: Beckham
CM: Keane
CM: Scholes
LM: Giggs
* best midfield in Premier League history

CF: Ronaldo
CF: RVN

Like Shami had to play Ronaldo as a striker, found it very hard to leave out Rooney as in all likelihood he'll end up being our all time record goal scorer and obviously there are notable absentees in the great Dane and King Eric. LB was very touch and go between Irwin and Evra but I tried to go with areas of the pitch that actually did play together (defence, midfield etc etc)

37 major honours under Fergie's 25 years in charge, without doubt the best of all time :)

Fergie was asked for for his top XI on the radio earlier, apparantly these are his choices

1 Bells
2 Glenfiddich
3 Famous Grouse
4 Talisker
5 Johnnie Walker
6 Chivas Regal
7 Dewars
8 Grants
9 Teachers
10 Whyte and Mackay
11 Glenmorangie

and as a sub for when struggling

12 Methylated Spirits

I've asked this before, in what was was VDS even close to being as good as Schmeichel? Even as a Liverpool fan I have to admit that Schmeichel is the best keeper I've seen in my lifetime. VDS on the other hand was decent but not a great deal more.

And Sir Bob's 20 honours in 9 years > all :p

I suspect VDS is only going to be truly appreciated by utd fans who watched him week in week out and saw the influence he had on the team something that was never more noticeable than when he wasn't playing

GK: Great Dane

DF: Gary Pallister
DF: Nemanja Vidic
DF: Gabriel Heinze
DF: Neville

M: Ryan Giggs
M: Roy Keane
M: Paul Scholes
M: Andrei Kanchelskis

CF: Christiano Ronaldo
CF: Wayne Rooney

RM: Beckham
CM: Keane
CM: Scholes
LM: Giggs

Never went unbeaten in the league though, did it? I've seen better.

I'm with BaZ on VDS though. There is no department I can think of where he outclasses Schmeichel. You say he had great influence, but then so did the latter. In spades. I also echo the comment that he's the best keeper I've ever seen in the Premiership.

GK: Schmeichel

DL: Irwin
DC: Stam
DC: Vidic
DR: G. Neville

ML: Giggs
MC: Robson (c)
MC: Scholes
MR: Kanchelskis

ST: Cantona
ST: Van Nistelrooy

For the obvious exclusions:
Robson over Keane, less of a card collector, robson would do the job without being as mental as keane
Kanchelskis over Becks/Ronaldo, I still have my Kanchelskis top from 1994 in the wardrobe :p
Cantona over Rooney, that transfer request still bugs me.

Don't know, don't care. :D

Alright, not necessarily the best players but these in particular i've enjoyed watching during the "Fergie" era.

Schmeichel
Kanchelskis
Scholes
Cantona
Ronaldo
Van Nistelrooy
Sparky Hughes
and Ince  (ok maybe not) ;)

I know this is all opinion and everything but a Best XI without Ronaldo?

sure, my best 11 doesnt need him, ive got pace and goal threat on either flank, with flair and creativity from cantona and out and out goalscorer up front in RVN. Its feels a more solid team without him.

Would have him on the bench though :D

People seem to forget that Van der Sar was incredibly average at Juventus, Honegstein and a few other people get rightly pulled up on it every by Jimbo on Football Weekly whenever he's been mentioned.

That midfield around 1999/2000 of Giggs/Keane/Scholes/Beckham was seriously wonderful to watch
