SAFs Finest XI

Interesting that everyone is essentially picking a 442. Shows a very British prejudice to football there.

Well done. People that live in England, watch football in England lean to the formations used most in England....

LOL

It's the "English" formation and style of football, that's still used by the majority of English football sides today, also, it's the formation that Sir Alex used at United.

Stupid comment is stupid.

I think a lot of people's XI are pretty much the same, bar the odd player here or there, mine is

GK- Schmeichel

RB - Gary Neville
LB - Denis Irwin
CB - Jaap Stam
CB - Nemanja Vidic

RM - David Beckham
LM - Ryan Giggs
CM - Paul Scholes
CM - Bryan Robson

AM - Cristiano Ronaldo
CF - Eric Cantona

@ Shamikebab - yes I realise it was what he used most but he didn't when Carlos was advising him and that is when I think tactically Man Utd really upped a gear. My point was with the players he had at his disposal over the years I am not sure 422 would be the best formation for the players people are naming eg I think Scholes at his prime would be entering the positions Rooney would be trying to find space in and they would just have got in each other's way. In a 451 then a supposed failure like Veron could have shone when he failed most likely due to the formation he as placed into at a pace of game he was unaccustomed to but that doesn't change the fact he was an excellent footballer. Likewise Berbatov is a great footballer you just have to admire but I do not think he has the energy or thrust that is required for how Man Utd play.

Yes but that does not mean that it is the best - the thread was SAFs Finest XI which does not mean that his best shoved in a 442 would be better than his best shoved in a 451 or 433 - which was my point.

The top clubs don't play 442 as they get overrun in the middle of the park and it has been this way for quite some time.

British manager. British club. British football formation.

And all the top British clubs don't play it in Europe. Because it is shown not to work - Chelsea play 451, Liverpool played a 4411, United on paper line up as 442 but in reality are generally playing a switch between 451 and 433 depending on what's going on etc.

So no need for the "stupid post is stupid" as it was a valid point and if you don't see that well then it shows how much you really know about football.

It's a thread about Ferguson's best 11. So, odds are people are going to use the formation he used the most as a template. It would make NO sense to do a SAF best 11, and then use a formation he rarely uses.

If you mean by template - not actually use it then maybe so - he plays 4231 atm and 433 used Ronaldo to best effect. In my eyes he seems to not play 442 now when he may be well advised to eg better usage for Berbatov and has not played 442 to a good effect since Cole and Yorke clicked for that one season of brilliance.

I've went for a 1-5-3-2 formation with this one. Screw 4-4-2!!

---------------------Schmeichel---------------------
-----------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------
Beckham---------Keane-------Scholes--------Giggs--
-----------------------------------------------------
-----------------------Robson-----------------------
-----------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------
-------Kanchelskis------Cantona------Rooney--------
-----------------------------------------------------
----------------Ronaldo----Van Nistelrooy------------

Are you aware that twenty-five is a significantly higher number than four?

These being the years that SAF has managed Man Utd, versus the years he's actually deviated from his 4-4-2 formation.

Right so if Pep gives up now manages Oldham and plays a 442 for the next 20 years you will go with that then using that logic.

How do you not get this?

EDIT:

So I'm guessing your point is that you pick a formation that best fits the players (because your poor example of Guardiola is presumably saying you'd only ever pick his current players)? In which case, you have noticed that most of the players that people have picked played in a 4-4-2 under Ferguson, right?
