Salary of tube and train drivers - why so high?

We'd perhaps all be getting paid about that much if we had a strong union behind us.

Best thing to salve our jealousy would be to bring them down to our level. Can't be having uneducated people earning more than those in the traditional professions.

I simply do not know what justifies these amounts, was wondering if anyone knew?

They belong to a very powerful union which means they get paid a massive amount for doing very little, if people complain they go on strike and so people avoid complaining as it's cheaper to just overpay them.

What is this, the plebs getting a decent salary for work, whatever next? You'll be telling me that they don't need to doff their caps to us first class passengers next.

I know a train driver. From one week to the next he doesn't know if he's going to have to get up at 04:00am to work a Saturday. The training was arduous, there's no regularity to it with the shifts, you're often unpopular with commuters and he bears the weight of people's safety on his shoulders every time he gets in the seat. I'm not sure I'd want all that and would expect it to be reasonably well paid.

So kind of like my job as a Nurse but double the pay. Cry me a ******* river.

Nothing to do with being responsible for lives etc.. etc.. so are Bus drivers and they don't get that level of pay. High pay is a result of a militant union and a career that is a semi-closed shop. They don't allow direct applicants - if it was open to more competition you'd find capable people willing to do that role for a substantial pay cut.

Yes, chance of a bus crash is immensely higher than chance of a train crash. Knowing routes, seriously, it's on tracks, there are red lights and should be an indication at every change of speed and gradient. Ultra concentration, the thing stops and starts constantly. You have turn around and breaks.

Having to deal with the public and getting scorn from them, seriously, in 15 years using the tube constantly I never once saw anyone scream at a driver, it happens to workers on a platform, people in ticket offices but both still extremely rare, but people bother to walk to the front of a train to scream at someone, literally never.

As you say, the job is paid way more than other similar roles because of unions and importance of the job so when they strike unfairly the other side gives in pretty quickly.

Bus drivers should absolutely be paid more than train drivers. The risk to themselves(every single passenger walking right past and dealing directly with them) is far greater, the number of attacks and incidents like spitting and attempts to steal money are far far higher and the risk of an accident on the roads is far far greater.

To put it into comparison Prison Officers start on 20 grand, that's what you get for having a very weak union and a no strike agreement.

Yet, if the moaners here were train drivers I am sure they wouldn't be moaning much more.

I know a train driver, so a bit different (though they also don't take applications from outside the organisation), and he has to know so much about how the train runs. He can end up in a situation where he is responsible for getting a train running again if there is an issue. He is regularly tested to make sure he is on top of his game and knows.

I don't think train drivers are overpaid, I think that many other jobs are underpaid due to poor management and staffing structures. I think the likes of police, nurses, fire fighters are vastly underpaid.

would being in london make any difference to the wage? cleaners in london for instance it doesn't matter if they are paid too low to really live there as maybe in 2 years they move on and go live or work wherever they fancy and someone else replaces them, however tube drivers you want for life or at least a large amount of time so the wage needs to provide them with an ok life in london

Some of the comments here have to be a joke surely:confused:

Most train companies do recruit off the street if there are no suitable internal applicants. You see driver vacancies all the time.

Train drivers absolutely deserve their pay, they go through months and months of training and constant monitoring throughout their career.

They get paid so much for their knowledge of the route and traction and I'm afraid it is a highly specialised role that not everyone can do (I wish I could =p)

It's a mixture of the job specifications but also the unions. Even at 60k I wouldn't do it I have to say, it doesn't really "do it" for me. Even if it was offered at my salary I wouldn't do it. It's just not the sort of work I could do. Irrespective of unions I think their salaries aren't too bad.

However I do feel the salaries are skewed unfairly, as people have mentioned, such as bus drivers and other industries (nurses for example) who do similar shifts, have equal pressure and responsibilities to lives.

It's definitely a good use of your time to be asking "why do they get so much in comparison to x" instead of "how come x aren't paid more".

The race to the bottom does nobody any good.

Interesting thread and I can see both sides of the discussion. A friend of the family used to be a tube driver and had someone jump out in front of him and its virtually ruined his life. He cant sleep, is half the weight he used to be and is a shadow of his former self. He went through all the counselling that was offered but said it was of little to no help for him.
