Salt and Sanctuary

Killed 3 bosses so far and I am currently in Sunken Keep.

Opened up loads of shortcuts and I think I've got a handle on the Sanctuaries now in terms of offerings and merchants etc.

I am finding the skill tree a bit overwhelming though. Reminds me a lot of Final Fantasy X.

Not sure how I feel about the message in a bottle mechanics tbh...If the game were online and the messaqes left by other players it would be great, but it does feel a bit tacked on as is. Maybe in a sequel if there is one it will go online.

The Kraeken Cyclops is absolutely killing me!

Edit- Got him. It is easy to forget that you have to jump to avoid some attacks, I always find myself trying to roll from everything. Area after that I'm finding tough too.

yea on ps4 every now and then another character may run through a sanctuary but as never sure if that was an online ghost or just a scripted thing

It's brilliant. In a few ways better than Dark Souls. Particularly the skill tree and weapon variety/combos. I can't imagine any Souls fan not lapping this up.

OK...Now things are getting serious!

I had some trouble with The False Jester. Really good fight, but I am really struggling at the Castle of Storms.

Also, I do find it difficult to find my way around.

Just beat the Tree Of Men which was a pretty challenging boss due mainly to the arena you fight him in. Really enjoying this a great deal. Probably more interesting and playable than some AAA games.

I really hope this has done well on PS4 too as aside from Bloodborne this makes every other Sony exclusive look embarrassing.

tbh i'm enjoying this more than DS3 at the moment. Although it can be a right bitch at times! Certainly less forgiving. I've lost massive amounts of salt - particularly after boss fights and trying to get back to the light. Although that was before I worked out how guide stones work :p

What build are you? I one-shot them with a jumping heavy hammer swing :D

Light armour shield-less rogue. Currently using a two-handed katana-like weapon and a dagger with a crossbow as secondary. I don't seem to do much damage to them tbh.

It is quite amazing that a two-person studio can make a game of this quality!

Beat the Kraeken Wyrm on about the 5th attempt... Some of the boss fights are better than DS3!

Edit- Red Hall of Cages is the best area so far. Really well designed.

Also, I think I now have a decent handle on the story.

I was having all kinds of trouble with the Tree of Men boss - then it clicked and down he went! Super satisfying. I agree re. bosses, so far they've been top notch.

Can anyone shed light as to how magic plays? I haven't touched it at all, and will probably save it for my second playthrough, but I have thought about using a few spells.

I transmuted the bullwhip into a weapon called Steel Centipede. It is awesome. A whip and a sword combined.

It is worth mentioning btw, that the Steam trading cards for this seem to sell quite well. I had 4 cards and got between 23 and 25p for each one...That's a quid in your Steam wallet right there!

I've done a fair bit of the game with both a melee and a mage build and both have their strengths. Magic is actually really good so far with a decent variety of spells though I suspect it'd be easy to become overpowered.

It's nice how using the thumbsticks together can choose the direction of the spell while you move around making combat feel fluid, and it's pretty simple to get to grips with.

The game feels a fair bit easier as a mage to be honest but the lighter armour does bring that increased element of risk, especially if you choose an all out attack build without a shield.

I really can't get enough of this game at the moment. Amazing that an indie title is very likely to make my top games of the year list.

This game tests me! But honestly, better than Dark Souls 3 imho. My only gripe is lack of weapons. Perhaps I've missed a bunch, but running a str build and have found about 4 suitable weapons. The skill tree has talents for different levels of axes, hammers, swords, each with heavy variants, and I'm not finding any. The merchant doesn't have them either.
