Samsung 840 Basic or Pro?

Hey guys. I'm waiting for my 120GB Vertex2 refurb to come back after my 2 year old original (my OS boot drive) died a death, and I'm debating upgrading it to a SATA3 SSD and relegating the old drive to be a scratch disk for photoshop or for games.

Here's the question: do I spend £120 on the 120GB 840 Pro, thus upgrading to the best performance and keeping the same size, or do I spend £130 on the 250GB 840 basic and sacrifice write speeds?

Things to consider: - I also have 2 x 1TB Sammy F1s, 1 x 500GB samsung F3, 60GB vertex 2, this refurb 120GB vertex2, and an optical drive using up nearly all of my SATA ports, so it would make sense to go for the larger capacity drive, but then I'd lose performance.

How much of a difference is there between the two drives in real world performance? I couldn't afford the 250GB pro, so it'll be one of these two when my birthday comes.

Ideas?

The vector 256gb is worth looking into as ocz are also giving away far cry 3 with it at the moment, you could sell that if you already have it. If you have a laptop I would look at religating the 60 gb vertex into that as a cache. Perhaps sell the refurbished vertex, generally consolidate into sata 3 with less drives.

That's a good plan. I don't know if I'd get much for the refurb though, so it may be worth more to me in my rig as a secondary drive. I don't have any use for the 60GB drive either besides keeping it in my rig, but it was bought new a few months back so might be worth flogging.

I have FC3, so that could indeed help with the costs. I'd like to try a non-OCZ drive for once though, but I'll look into that as I've heard the vector is the dog's proverbials (although ever so slightly slower than the 840 Pro)

If it was me, i would go for the 250gb basic.

Are you sure you are getting a Vertex 2 refurb?

I had to RMA my 2E and got a Vertex 3 refurb in exchange

EDIT

Still on sata 2, so wouldn't benefit from sata 3 speed anyway. (hence choosing higher capacity)

Well, it should be delivered today so we'll see, but the product code in the email seems to correspond with a vertex 2 so you must have lucked out!

Requested Parts
1x OCZSSD3-2VTX120G.RF OCZ RMA Replacement

Cheers guys, I hadn't considered the warranty. I may have to put some more funds aside and then top it up with birthday cash to get the big Pro

I went got the 250gb 840 recently. Slower write speeds ? Maybe, but this thing seems to make my PC very fast.

Oh yeah of course. I mean it'll still be faster than my vertex2e drive. I just wasn't sure if I would be better off trying to maximise the upgrade.

I got the 250GB 840 for £123 recently and it performs just as well as my Crucial M4's. It also comes with a 3 year warranty. I would imagine I'd upgrade within a couple of years so life expectancy isn't a problem for me :)

Well, my replacement drive has, within 6 hours of being powered on, already started dropping out of the BIOS. Looks like I'll be upgrading sooner than I thought :/
