samsung 850 evo m.2 not showing

fitted a samsung 850 evo m.2 drive into my gigabyte x99 soc force board. it's not showing up in windows, disk manager samsungs magician or the bios. never used one before. is there anything special i have to do or install for it to work?

It will be shared with one of the sata ports so make sure you don't have a device connected to the shared port, i.e check your mainboard manual to find out which sata port it shares with and make sure that's got nothing connected.

No, as that drive is SATA M.2 and not PCIE M.2.

Your options are to either return it in favour of a PCIE drive, but as mentioned above you'll only be able to go up to 20Gbps, so 20/8 == absolutely max is 2.5GBps, so if you got a Samsung Pro 960 for example, you wouldn't achieve the full max speed of the drive because your M.2 port isn't an ultra one (32Gbps)

Your other option is to get a M.2 to normal SATA3 SSD Converter and plug it into a normal SATA port if you have one available. Startech do such a converter for example.
