Samsung Galaxy S... highest spec Android phone released... also with QWERTY!

Oh well, after looking really hard for a qwerty droid phone, and after several conversations with t-mobile, I have ordered this phone for delivery on Mon...
As I am on a unrestricted data tarrif, I couldn't affort to get anything that would mean a new sim, as I would get hammered for my data use.
T-mobile were offering a free Desire or a Galaxy S for £50 and a 12 month contract extension, so I went for the Galaxy with the intention of using it for a couple of months and then selling it on and buying an Atrix/OptimusX2/Galaxy 2 sim free..
If I like it, then I might keep it for the year, at least this way, I get to try android on a decent handset for £50. If I decide I hate Android, I can go back to my N900 and I haven't really lost anything.
In the meantime, Im going to spend the weekend looking at XDA and the best ROM's for the Galaxy - just like old times and WinMo CE/5/5.5/6/6.1/6.5 - haven't flashed a phone in ages..
Got a lot of catching up to do, and Im hoping I like Android, becuase if I don't, Im stuck waiting for whatever Nokia decide to bring out as their one and only MeeGo device, and I have lost faith now..

Why did I switch? Zinio reader - really annoys me that I couldn't use it on my N900 as I have a lot of digital subscriptions, Google Maps, though the community was beginning to bring out some half decent mapping/location apps and a decent spreadbetting app, as that was really doing my head in..

So Hi fellow Galaxians, and expect to see some posts from me soon!!!

Just gone from Nokia to Android myself mate, good move. Great fun, just taken the plunge and rooted my Desire HD :D  Got a rom downloaded, just waiting for a full charge to play this arvo.

sigh i manged to finally get Splode for this and the game is telling me my firmware is out of date :(

Would kies give me an update? The phone is unlocked - Ornage - rooted

2.1 Update 1 Eclair

oh and if i turn the phone off and then on again it takes AGES (1 - 2min to load everything :/)

cant believe the phone is worth about £200 on current market :(

Well the screen is very good, I have kindle and City Index spreadbetting so Im happy...
However, maybe it is because Im a noob and it will take a while to get used to Android, but it is horrible, not at all intuitive and the multitasking is terrible. switching data between apps is a nightmare.
what is the world coming to? Im actually going to sit down and read the manual

The amount of pre-installed **** is absolutely shameful, I know I need to put a custom ROM on, but I want to get used to it a bit more, so I can measure how much faster it will be once I do...
Im also not familiar enough with the process yet, so more reading required..

There appear to be a few bugs with the leaked 2.3.2, so wouldn't upgrade yet. It is however great news and confirmation that Samsung are working on a Gingerbread release. AS soon as one is final and the source released, the real fun with custom builds can begin - can't wait!

Yeah, you would have a much better experience on a non-branded firmware. So you're on a 3 (H3G) 2.2 firmware? I'd suggest Samsung's JS5 if you can debrand it, it's a lot faster and lag-free, plus less bloat. I'm now on Darky's ROM 9.2 (based on JPY) and it's probably the best I've used so far. 9.3 will be out in not too long as well, which will be based on a newer firmware.

Check out this guide here, should have the phone running super-sweet if you do it.

Just make sure you've read up on using Odin and checked the 3-button fix if yours doesn't work. I have a H3G handset and it didn't.

Don't use the guide above - I did and I now have a bricked phone....

No need for cf root. I might even move that thread you used as it is out of date.

I have a recovery plug on the way :(

The Darky 9.2 has good reviews at least until the cynagen mod 7 is out...

Great, thanks :)

I'm up to 6. Now select "Install zip from SDCARD", but there is no option, only "apply sdcard:update.zip". Any suggestions of what to do? I've had a look around the thread and others, but the question seems to never be answered.

Cheers again :)

Edit: Sorted.

ROM Flashing

// Texts in italic are detailed/additional instructions.

> It's always better if you flash with 100% battery so it can be re-calibrated correctly.

1. Download the ROM from above, and put it on your INTERNAL SD-Card.
Don't unzip it, as this will break the signature.

2. Download ClockworkMod Recovery from http://www.multiupload.com/Q25HUP0YWF
You need ClockworkMod Recovery, as this won't work with the Stock Samsung Recovery.

3. Put the ClockWorkMod Recovery (update.zip) on your INTERNAL SD-Card.

4. If you're on my ROM v5 or higher, you don't need to disable the lagfix.
> If you are using another Lagfix, disable it NOW - just for the safety.

5. Shutdown your phone, wait for it to power off completely (vibrates on Froyo, check buttons keypad light on Eclair), then boot the phone into Recovery Mode (press Volume UP, keep it pressed, then press HOME button, keep it pressed, then press Power button, keep it pressed until you see the Galaxy S screen. Release all three buttons when you see it).

6. Select "Apply SDCARD:update.zip" (use volume keys/rocker to move up and down, and HOME button to select).
ClockworkMod Recovery will boot now (you may have to do the "Apply update.zip" twice for ClockworkMod Recovery to show up). This step will be complete when you see 'ClockworkMod Recovery 2.5.1.2 written at the bottom in the Recovery screen.

NICE! Are you going to try it out, or wait for a few more to come out?

I was thinking to wait a day or two normally whenever I upgraded theres always another rom the day after and its like OMG I just backed everything up and went through all that for no reason xD.

But its looking good so far after a quick loot at XDA poeple said it was extremely fast, and it comes with EXT4 in the kernel at stock so maybe their planning on finally changing to EXT4 instead of this lame rfs :D.

I'll let you know if I upgrade, I will most likey do it thursday night.

That's a shame. As you can tell, it worked perfectly for my phone with 9.2 so I thought I'd share it.

What went wrong for you?

I changed my post now matey.

Thanks again to the hard work of Darky on this ROM. I've been on 9.3 since the day it was out, upgraded from 9.2 using CWM and wipe and it was a breeze.

Yesterday, I sent several SMS, had two short phone calls and checked my calendar a few times - the battery is still on 80% now, 1d 2h since charge. That's the best performance I've had so far, and it is under 'normal' usage for me. The ROM is also the fastest I've used so far! No lag noticeable at all, with lagfixes off, but using Voodoo kernel.

I've yet to find any bugs. Titanium Backup did FC at the end of a batch operation however. Worked fine the second time.
