Samsung Galaxy S... highest spec Android phone released... also with QWERTY!

You could have easily fixed it. As long as you can get into download mode anything is fixable. I reccomend you do a little more reading as it's quite routine thing to have the phone stop loading when messing about with custom bits and pieces and have to fix it via download mode.

Care to explain how?
Ive tried default kernels and so forth. I have the phone here with me still, so if you have any other ideas, I'm open to suggestions.

Anybody else's GPS cack since the 2.2 update?

It takes an age to pick up any sat's (if at all) and keeps losing track of where I am on the road....making it basically unusable.

I was on the M1 today and it thought I was in a field for about 20 miles..

Never had any problem on 2.1.

Kernels or entire firmware?

Try:- Recovery mode, clear cache, factory reset and format SD. Then flash 512 PIT with Odin 1.7, tick repartition only don't tick reboot. Once done, using the power button to power down, reboot to download mode directly. Then flash JPO as PDA (full low level below) ticking reboot and no PIT/repartition.

Cheers for the links and advice, I got my new phone this morning, but will make sure to try this if I stuff up again :)

I did pretty much all of that, apart from repartition - reckon that woulda done it?

So before I go ahead and do it all over again - lemme just check if I got it all right.

1. I need to change the Kernel of my new Galaxy to a "2e" Kernel, because the current updated one does not allow unverified/unsigned packages

Which Kernel do you advise I use?

2. Once a new kernel has been flashed using Odin, I can continue to install to Root the device using the clockworkmod here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=817703
and then install the ROM?

Edit: seems my new Galaxy has 2.1 update 1 on it.
Does that mean my bootloader/kernel is 2e and I don’t have to flash first and skip to step 2 above?

Yes, copy over the rom and cwm as update.zip. Run the update, often twice, then cwm the rom. Before you do that root the eclair and get the /efs folder. There's a nice Z4Root app available now.

Im currently on Jp6, is it worth me upgrading to jpo/jpa?

thanks
Yes,way better.

Nope, cwm is an extended recovery with loads of uses. A root is really just admin rights, uses a couple system files. Some of the 2.2 kernels you've seen are pre-rooted and some have 2e or both.

Cool, I'll look at the z4root app tonight. There's no mention of the EFS folders in the Docs installation guide, why do I need access to it?

Its not essential , its just better to keep your original product code for warrenty purposes and in case your iemi gets mixed up.

Basically its just in case ;)

Read it again :)

Pre-Requisites

01. Disable Voodoo if have it installed (create a folder named “disable lagfix” inside the “Voodoo” folder on your internal sdcard and reboot). If you’re coming from sztupy’s kernel, disable all lagfixes.

02. Make sure have the 2e recovery. If you don't have 2e recovery, see FAQ.

03. Make sure you have a backup of your /efs (not mandatory, but highly recommended).

04. Factory reset is NOT required, but is recommended. Wipe cache and dalvik cache if you’re not performing a factory reset.

05. DO NOT apply any outside theme/battery mods. See FAQ point 9 if you want a circle battery mod with this theme.

You'd be very silly not to get a copy of the folder, just the once on a new phone, before flashing any custom rom.

Why? Some firmwares/roms have been known to rewrite certain important files in the permanent memory area of the phone. More than likely it'll be fine, but the following has be known to happen. If you do loose the imei, phone's pretty much a brick.

IMEI "corruption".
nv_data.bin checksum does not pass the check and the phone / baseband generates a new blank one. Baseband test IMEI (000xxxxxxxxxxxx) will be displayed.

No service.
There is no service even a functional SIM card is inserted.
You cannot receive or make calls, receive or send sms, etc (obviously).

Freeze / lock-down.
The phone will not react to anything besides pressing power key.
You cannot unlock the display to enter PIN code.

Wrong PIN code.
The phone will not accept any PIN code on any SIM (even the correct one ).
Phone displays "wrong PIN code" message even the try counter (three strikes you know) does not change.

Product code changed to KOR.
= Blocked Kies updates (without a registry "hack")

Excellent stuff, my phone's working like an absolute dream and looks the t!ts too with the theme :D

Only thing missing is "gallery" . Is there an APK for it, as it doesn't seem to be included in the base to medium nor medium to full package install...?
