Samsung Galaxy S... highest spec Android phone released... also with QWERTY!

I've been using Darky 8.0 + Speedmod kernel 500 and the battery life and the UI is smooth like butter. Definitely the best combination I've used so far. Darky keeps updating the Rom very frequently which is very good and its so easy to flash without loosing all data.

Can anyone give me the lowdown on GPS with the Galaxy S? I read that it was a bit flakey - slow to lock on to signals, and frequently dropping the connection. Was this just a release day thing, Is it fixed now?

It's fine for my needs but if you plan to rely on it when driving it can be problematic.
weakest point of an otherwise superb phone

So you just flashed the speedmod kernel?

How does the update for the rom affect it since it comes with voodoo as standard?

This Darky rom won't allow me to rotate the screen.
It's either stuck in one mode or the other.
Basically Auto Rotate doesn't work.

It's working now :D

When I first installed I went to the horizontal calibration and set that up.
I've just gone back to it and got nowhere and then thought 'What if I put the phone on it's back and not one of the edges before I calibrate?'

:p

I installed Samsung Kies on my laptop about 3 weeks ago and it wasn't a great piece of software, it upgraded my phone to Froyo and it's been buggy and slow ever since.

I decided to download Samsung Kies onto my desktop and got it off the Samsung Galaxy S website and the program now looks totally different. The old one was like a PC desktop with a MAC style bar at the bottom, the new one looks a bit like iTunes. I've got version 2.0somethingorother is this right?

It also says there is another firmware update to JPY? Should I do this?

This new program keeps popping up with errors and such but says the following:

Current firmware version: PDA:JPO/ Phone:JPP / CSC:JPO
Latest Firmware version: PDA:JPY/ Phone:JPY / CSC:JPY

It appears the first version I used was 1.51 and this new version is 2.0.

Links to both pieces of software on Samsungs site and no idea which one I should be using? This new one (2.0) won't import contacts or back anything up and it keeps crashing on me.

Right, downloaded Kies 1.5.3 which is the latest for the Galaxy S, it also says I have an update to do but cannot seem to get it to backup my contacts, if I click copy to PC it says device is in use and if I click backup it just never backs them up, the bar just keeps moving up and down but in the folder no files are ever backed up.

All I want to do is backup the phone, update to the latest version as its so slow and buggy atm and not have to spend hours readding all my contacts.

This is a bloody nightmare.

Are you definitely making a connection with KIES?
Can you open up the SD on the phone?

Yes, it shows the phone, it's got my number there and everything.

Just clicking backup contacts and it does nothing, other stuff is fine and I managed to update to Froyo a few weeks back fine.

Can open the SD through Kies or via My Computer no problems.

when i copy and paste writing from the pc then send it to my samsung via bluetooth how can i send it a a message to someone i use thinkfree to open he file . its a Text Document (.txt) but it wont send it .

Guys, found a second hand 6 month old Galaxy S on vodaphone, immaculate condition, box and accessories included, for £180.

The guy says it's a 'gti 900' in the advert, what does this mean? Does he mean i9000?

Also, I am on Orange (HTC Hero) how easy is it to get the phone unlocked? I've found instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=761045 just wondered if anyone has had any experience with unlocking their Galaxy.

Thanks

The Galaxy S actually comes in about three different flavours, depending on region. The international/European version (that you want) is the GT-i9000.

Unlocking seems very easy on this phone, but I haven't done it.

Cheers for the info, I'll check if he means GT-I9000 :)

Could be a handy upgrade as HTC Heros seem to be going for about £130-140ish shand :D
