Samsung i7500 (Android)

You could upgrade on your line to the most expensive phone you are able to get, and sell it, then buy the samsung simfree.

Also some of these companies will let you 'upgrade' to the samsung too. They just take the upgrade comission and apply it to a sim free galaxy instead of the t-mobile phone they were suposed to give you :)

Sounds interesting, where does this?

Well its either 192Mb or 288Mb. Confirmed by Samsung its not 128 anyway!
192mb I think. I got someone to check the "available memory" using the System Monitor app of an i7500 and Hero. The i7500 reporting 93MB, the Hero 192MB. The Hero is reported as having a total of 288MB, so it makes sense that the i7500 has 190ish MB (ie 100MB less than the Hero).

What actual difference does it really make? Its pretty zippy, the memory isnt used up.

I imagine it will shorten the phones lifespan, as eventually it won't be able to cope with multi-tasking that android will support in the future.

I'm sure it'll be fine for the next 18months though - I'm still going to get one sim-free when they come out over here. Got £385 for my Hero, which will be going straight toward this ;)

Is the system monitor app installed by default? I just powered up my hero for the first time and cantr find it. I dont really want to set anything up on this phone because i'm going to sell it!

Just had a check myself - its reporting 192Mb memory.

shrimp3r said the hero was also reporting 192mb in that app?

BTW... android - WOW!

EDIT:

So i installed system monitor from the Android store (On my HTC Hero):

Memory Usage:
Available Memory: 192mb
Memory used: 117MB

Christo, what does your samsung galaxy say?

So is there much lag on the phone seeing as it only has 192mb? Can you run a couple of apps at one time with no noticable lag?
BTW, I've read reports of HTC Magic owners running the Hero ROM without problems - the Magic has the same memory and CPU as the i7500, so if it can run the Hero Sense UI the 192MB of memory must be doing an OK job. If you root the phone you can create a swap file on your mem card, which is meant to improve performance.

The way I see it is the lower memory can be worked around (killing tasks, swap file) - however you can get around the fact that the Hero lacks a camera flash, doesn't have the OLED screen and is thicker. If you root the i7500 and stick a Hero ROM on it you even get a the funky Sense UI. The main problem now could the how much O2 wanna charge for it.

Seems like as good a place as any to ask. Would an Android app be able to use the same push/exchange mail settings as the iPhone and be able to pick up mail and contacts from the exchange or would something need to be done on the server side?
