Hi there

Samsung's super-fast and vastly cheaper than the Intel 750 series are now available, the AHCI models are all in stock and reduced in price with the even faster NVME models arriving tomorrow:-

Samsung SM951 128GB M.2 PCI-e Gen3 8Gbps x 4 AHCI Solid State Drive (MZHPV128HDGM-00000) @ £67.99 inc VAT

The SM951 boasts outstanding performance, supporting both PCIe 3.0 and PCIe 2.0 interfaces. They can read and write sequentially at 1,600 MB/s (megabytes per second) and 1,350 MB/s respectively based on PCIe 2.0. This performance level is approximately three times faster than that of the latest SSD with a SATA interface and about 30 percent faster than that of the Samsung XP941, its predecessor. In addition, the new SSD's random read and write speeds reach up to 130,000 and 85,000 IOPS (inputs / outputs per second) respectively.

For ultra-slim notebooks and workstations wanting to adopt the PCIe 3.0 interface, the SM951 can read and write sequentially at 2,150 MB/s and 1,550 MB/s respectively, which would provide approximately four times faster sequential reading performance compared to current SATA SSDs. With a PCIe 3.0 interface, the drive achieves substantially higher energy efficiency, requiring only about 450 MB/s per watt for sequential reading and 250 MB/s per watt for sequential writing, which translates into a more than 50 percent improvement in performance per watt over that of the XP941 SSD.

In addition, the SM951 is the first SSD to adopt the L1.2 low power standby mode (which allows all high-speed circuits to be turned off when a PC is sleeping or in hibernation) as defined by PCI-SIG (the PCIe standards body). By embracing the L1.2 level of standby operation, the SM951's power consumption is drastically reduced – to under 2mW, about a 97 percent decrease from the 50mW consumed using a L1 state.

Samsung's SM951 comes in the M.2 form factor (80 mm x 22 mm), which is only about one seventh the size of a 2.5" SSD. Also, it weighs approximately six grammes. The drive's compactness is well suited for most notebook PC designs, freeing up space for other components including the battery. The SM951 lineup consists of 512, 256 and 128 GB SSDs.</p>

NOTE: Some M.2 motherboards only support SATA 6Gbps speeds or PCI-e x 2 lanes. You need to make sure your board supports PCI-E x4 Lanes to get the full speed from this SSD.

You have the capacity wrong in the description of the Intel 800GB :p

Going to be picking up a Samsung soon enough, don't know whether to get the AHCI or NVMe version - Is there a vast difference (£50 worth) between them?

Thanks buddy!

I'd always buy the fastest personally and the NVMe ones are much faster on operations so I can only assume if its an OS drive it would be even quicker, whether or not you will notice though I am unsure.

I would always buy the fastest. :D

You can get an adapter, and as long as you're not running dual graphics cards it should work fine :)

We looked at the Lycom DT-120 which seemed a great solution but the factory inform us it is not bootable with Samsung SM951 series, so we cancelled our order.

Do you know of a tried and tested bootable PCI-E card for the M.2 PCI-E SSD's such as SM951?

Obviously the one which Plextor use works but they do not sell it separately.

Oh wow - I did not know this. Is it not bootable even with the BIOS updates and using the NVMe versions? I know earlier AHCI models had trouble booting in a lot of motherboards, but since then the situation has improved a lot with BIOS updates and the like.

I emailed the factory again this morning for another update, but I suspect the answer will be the same as they probably do not test.

Lycom DT-120 works, but only as a storage drive, so far factory says SM951 does not support boot function.

Be interested to know if anyone have an SM951 in a PCI-E card which is bootable.

Otherwise only solution is to essentially do a full upgrade to Z170 or X99. :)

Would the SM951 run at full speed on a MSI Z97 Max AC? Getting confused with some of the info on my motherboard spec sheet.

It does say supports up to 10GB/s but just checking encase they mean Gb/s.

Someone will correct me if I am wrong but full speed is 32GB/s I think?

So it would work but at 1/3rd of advertised speed. You need a PCI-Adapter or an upgrade to Z170 / X99 platform.
